ICA Tour

Abstract

Ever since Andy Warhol and his entourage caused a near-riot here in 1965, the ICA has been shaking up the city with shows revealing the hottest and coolest trends in contemporary art. The ICA has led the way with the first-ever museum shows of Warhol, Laurie Anderson, Agnes Martin, Robert Indiana and other influential artists. The wide-open spaces and ultra-high ceilings of its building on the Penn campus, opened in 1991, allow plenty of room for artists to let loose with multimedia installations that climb, hang or scatter through the galleries.

The new media tour will focus on ICA’s Guide by Cell system which invites visitors to explore the idea of weaving in the cultural landscape through a series of conversations with the artist Sheila Hicks and commentary by the curators. Listen to Philadelphia-area scholars who draw out these ideas in their own fields— architecture, economics, science, and religion—unraveling the ways weaving threads through so much of the contemporary and the ancient world. Check out ICA’s blog Miranda for a look at the installation process of the major work from Target’s headquarter’s in Minneapolis and other behind-the-scenes of this significant exhibition.
