Why

The Getty Research Institute is the research and scholarly division of the J. Paul Getty Trust and supports efforts of the Getty Museum.  The Getty Research Institute website http://www.getty.edu/research/ had not received an editorial and design overhaul in over ten years and looked like it!  For example, in spite of the fact that the Getty Research Institute is a library, there was no section just for the library.

Similarly, there was no section for the Scholars Program, Special Collections, Digital Collections, etc.  A small group at the Research Institute spent 18 months looking through nearly 8,000 pages of deep content to revise, rewrite, and reorganize all of it. The end result is that scholars here and all over the world have much easier access to our formerly "hidden" treasure trove of special collections, rare materials, archives, and over 1 million library books.

We now have a place to post videos of lectures by scholars in the field; a section for our new scholarly books; a section devoted to search tools for digging deeper into our site; and much more.
