The Wonderful North

Conference:
MW2008
Institution:
Arts Council England
Designer:
Numiko
Why:

This is a lovely, quirky, colourful, unusual website. It's kind of a blog, kind of an online road trip. It's full of odd media clips, bits of writing and more by two artists who are on the road, visiting public art sites across the north of Britain. The project happened when three Northern UK regional development agencies, One NorthEast, Yorkshire Forward and Northwest Regional Development Agency got together to invest £4.4m in an ambitious public arts programme to improve perceptions of the North and to attract overseas visitors. The programme, 'Welcome to the North', commissioned Arts Council England to create a virtual gateway to the North of England.Digital media agency Numiko, with artists Bryan and Laura Davies, won the competitive tender with their proposal The Wonderful North, due to a combination of innovative technology and artistic credibility.
