Digital Content: Identifying the "Orphans" & Monetizing the Heirlooms

The non-profit Copyright Clearance Center, which in 2008 marks thirty years of offering licenses and permissions to print and digital content from the world's most sought-after publications, is currently developing several online platforms of interest to conference attendees.

For example, Copyright Clearance Center has recently developed DiscoverWorks an online, Wikipedia-like platform that allows individuals and research institutions to search for and identify copyrighted materials. This effort comes in response to the problem of so-called "Orphan Works," which is the subject of great concern with museums and libraries in the US and around the world, and which has recently drawn controversy and great attention from the U.S. Copyright Office and the Congress. "DiscoverWorks" leverages social networking and the power of the World Wide Web to develop communities of interest in this important aspect of copyright law and regulation – communities that certainly include museums and their curators and technologists.

In addition, CCC is preparing to launch later this year (2008) a new and innovative approach to online licensing. "Ozmo" will provide individual and enterprise content owners with accessible, practical and convenient licensing and purchasing solutions for the commercial reuse of all media, including design, illustration and photography, for marketing and promotional use; retail merchandising; and many other related applications. For many small museums, tribal associations, and related cultural organizations across the US and the world, ironically, resources are limited for development of licensing solutions that could generate much-needed royalty income.
