Job Title: Web Developer
Department: New Media
Responsible to: Technical Web Manager
£30,000 circa, 9 month Fixed Term

Applicants will be required to submit a portfolio with their application forms. Please see the person specification for guidance of what should be included in your portfolio.

Overall Purpose of the Job
To develop and maintain the IWM’s new web sites using Drupal 7, including web service integration. To work with the Multimedia Manager and other developers to create, deliver or support on-going rich-media and data-driven applications in gallery and on the web.

The post-holder will be part of a small team delivering a “clean-slate” website in August 2011. Their focus will be on developing new modules so extensive experience of developing back-end code is essential, along with the application of Drupal coding standards. Some experience of Drupal theming, building themes and Web standards compliance is highly desirable as the role will involve collaborating with our Web Designer.  The applicant should be able to demonstrate their skills with a portfolio of work to include working websites (production or demonstration) and code samples.

Although strong Drupal skills are essential, we are a small team with the opportunity and requirement for all members to contribute to a variety of work, in collaboration with the ICT department. The Drupal site will consume several web services, and the post holder will be involved in this integration work and in the development or specification of some of the internal services. The Museum is planning a refresh of its onsite interactive multimedia, as well as significantly increasing its online rich-media offerings. The post-holder may be required to contribute to this and support the integration of online and in-gallery activity. We therefore need an adaptable developer with a sound understanding of common cross-platform web technologies and the ability to implement high-quality front-end code, but also to integrate various data sources at the back-end. Our technical platform is evolving quickly and is almost certain to require as-yet unidentified skills, so it is also vital that the post-holder is able to adapt and learn quickly.

An interest in the subject matter of the museum and in the public communication of heritage is highly desirable. You will need to have a rigorous focus on the needs of users, translating these into technical solutions that fit our long-term goals. You must be able to work well in a collaborative environment.

Principal Accountabilities
The post holder will report to the Technical Web Manager. Responsibilities will include:

  • Drupal theming and module development
  • Web service integration
  • Other front-end work and multimedia development
  • All staff are required to attend "Introduction to Health & Safety Course" to gain awareness as to what the employer and the employee are required to do to support Health & Safety legislation.

This job information cannot be all encompassing. It is inevitable over time that the emphasis of the job will change without changing the general character of the job or the level of duties and responsibilities entailed. This information may be periodically reviewed, revised and updated in consultation with the post holder to reflect appropriate changes.
