"The NMM is at a crucial moment in reimaging its brand and visitor experience. We have ambitious plans to rebrand the Museum and website, reach out on new digital platforms, and imaginatively integrate digital media within our public spaces and galleries. The Senior Interaction Designer will play a key role in engaging and delighting our visitors through excellent interaction design.

Your role is to lead a multidisciplinary studio within the National Maritime Museum’s Digital Media department, working closely with Exhibitions, Marketing and Visitor Experience. This role is as much about communicating with your development and content peers – through creative facilitation and prototyping – as it is about producing final visual designs.

Reports to: Head of Digital Media

Responsible for: Digital Media Developer and Senior Digital Media Engineer

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as the creative director for all digital media projects, collaborating with project managers, editors and developers to define the visitor experience
  • Advise on the procurement of external design services – from the production of briefs, to the selection of agencies, and sign-off on deliverables
  • Facilitate creative workshops, present design treatments, and advise other departments on the use of digital media
  • Design websites, digital displays and interactive exhibits, following a visitor-centred design process, and with an understanding of standards, such as accessibility
  • Prepare excellent design documentation, including user flows and wireframes — and then work with developers to see them realised
  • Source or commission photography, illustration, animation and video
  • Research, develop and disseminate design standards for web, mobile and interactive exhibit development

Skills and experience:

Essential

  • Experience of the full development cycle as a lead designer, working in a commercial or public sector context. A natural collaborator who can communicate effectively with a variety of people, lead a team and manage a schedule
  • Strong analytical and visual skills, in-depth knowledge of user experience design, web standards, typography and accessibility
  • High degree of competence in Illustrator and Fireworks or Photoshop
  • Some experience with multimedia tools, such as Flash and Adobe Premiere

Desirable

  • Experience of working with AV hardware and tangible interfaces
  • Skill in video production, 3D animation or AfterEffects is a plus

Terms and conditions:

Hours: Core hours of work are 41 per week, 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management.  Due to the project nature of the work the successful candidate will be based at the Museum in Greenwich.

Salary: £30,000 - £37,000

To apply please email a CV and covering letter to recruitment@nmm.ac.uk or post to Human Resources, National Maritime Museum, Park Row, Greenwich, London, SE10 9NF
