Re: Audio Recording Devices

June 5, 2013 - 10:29am

Hi Sarah,

We have written a bunch of guides on using digital media which will give
you lots of tips at http://www.jiscdigitalmedia.ac.uk/creating

I'm sure others will provide links to their own personal fav devices. Be
sure to read about preparation to get a good recording as this is critical
in addition to having suitable devices, which used badly become worthless. [...]

Hi Sarah,

Park = ?

"sound quality as professional as possible" means?

Hint: by asking precise questions, you max the chance of getting best answers :) !

Audio Recording Devices

June 5, 2013 - 10:10am

Hi there,

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, however, it
seems to be the most appropriate of all my e-newsletters! Some of you may
have seen my post today on the GEM newsletter, asking in general about
community audio trails. I am an MA student at the IoE in Museums and
Galleries in Education and am embarking on my final course project for
which I am looking into and would like to create my own community audio
trail for a park. I would like the sound quality to sound as professional
as [...]

Re: Comparative web stats

June 4, 2013 - 11:40am

Good point...

I think we are basically looking for annual figures for the number of visitors +/or number of visits and number of page hits to the organisations main website.

Thanks

Linda

Museum Analytics is quite useful for social media (Facebook/Twitter) stats.

They do have website stats, but unfortunately only for 2011.

Re: Freebase for museum collections

June 3, 2013 - 12:23pm

Hi Martin,

We are using Freebase quite extensively in our project,
DECIPHER.
We use their Suggest API to improve the metadata for various fields like
Location and People. While I can't answer for its availability at least the
data in it is fully open under the CC-BY licence. see
https://developers.google.com/freebase/data.

All the best,

Eoin.

Re: Come and celebrate your failure with us!

June 3, 2013 - 8:21am

Hi all,

just a quick reminder that people attending the Museum Informatics
event tomorrow and any museumy locals who fancy a drink and a chat
will be gathering at Brigantes in York tonight for a bit of
#drinkingaboutmuseums.

If you're curious about the Failure Swapshop (but perhaps slightly
scared of this strange new thing), drop me a line or chat to me
tonight. For more information, see
http://www.alukeonlife.com/2013/02/22/failure-swapshop-barcampnfp-edition/
but the basic format is a bit like AA: [...]

Re: Freebase for museum collections

June 3, 2013 - 8:16am

Frankie Roberto and I had variously played around with different
things (exhibitions, biographical data related to objects) but I've
been a bit wary about relying on Freebase as I'm not sure what
Google's plans for it are - it was down for a few days a while ago,
and they didn't seem to respond to questions, which didn't bode well. [...]

Seeking 20 beta testers from museums to help evaluate a new platform & app

May 31, 2013 - 11:35am

Dear MCG'ers,

The Collections Trust is seeking 20 volunteers from UK museums to
beta-test a new platform and mobile application (Windows 8, iOS and
Android) that we will be launching to the sector at the OpenCulture
conference reception on the 2nd July.

The testing should only take a few minutes and it would really help us
fine-tune the offer before it goes live. [...]

Freebase for museum collections

May 31, 2013 - 7:48am

Has anyone come across, used or designed Freebase schemas for museum objects? I am interested in investigating Freebase's brand of version control and how this could be applied to collections data (initially with a small test set of records).

Show your support for #AllezCulture - the campaign to defend Europeana's EU funding

May 30, 2013 - 9:34am

Dear colleague,

I am writing to invite you to get involved in #AllezCulture, a new
campaign to encourage the European Commission to commit to ongoing
support for Europeana (www.europeana.eu) and its community of GLAMs
across Europe under the current EU budget round.

Europeana is included under the 'CEF' funding programme, where it faces
stiff competition from a range of agendas including e-Health, e-Justice
and a Safer Internet. While these are all important causes, it is
equally important that our community makes its voice heard to protect
the past 5 years of investment in digital cultural programmes across
Europe and to [...]

Come and celebrate your failure with us!

May 29, 2013 - 9:51am

The MCG are hosting a Failure Swapshop and we'd like to invite you be part of it!

The Swapshop is a light-hearted way for us to learn from each other and where the emphasis is not on the failure itself, but on what happened next. We're looking for two or three people willing to share what you learnt from a business, personal or technical failure with a friendly and supportive group of fellow professionals. The Swapshop will be a small part of the pub meet-up the evening before the Collections Trust & MCG Museum Informatics event http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/events/museum-informatics-event [...]
