Re: Photographing art high on a wall

Dear Alun,
As current Chair of the UK museum photography group (AHFAP) with 200 members across the UK, could I help you find a suitable solution? If you wish you can either post a message to our JISC list (www.Jiscmail.ac.uk/ahfap) or contact me off list.

I personally have photographed works of art quite high up, around first floor height using a Bembo 1 tripod, but there are other solutions it just depends on how high you need to go.
Best regards

Hi Alun,

If the object is two dimensional you will probably be able to take the
picture from below and 'distort' it in Photoshop afterwards to correct the
skew.
For objects behind glass, that also enables a surprising 'trick of the
trade' that dramatically reduces the effects of reflections.
Alternatively there are perspective control lenses but I don't think
anything that exotic should be necessary. [...]

Consider also those remote controlled "toy" helicopters, which can
carry a camera:

Photographing art high on a wall

Museum Computer Group (MCG, UK) list feed - 12 hours 32 min ago

Dear all,

I am looking for examples of photographers digitising art, which is high on a wall. This could be from a cherry-picker, however the image I know I have seen in the recent past is photographers using a camera mounted on an extendible pole. Maybe this is an image of National Trust conservators at work, or some Wiki Loves Public Art volunteers at work. The camera would be controlled remotely from a laptop, tethered on the floor. [...]

It should be said that if you *start* out planning a responsive web design it costs no more.

It's retrofitting or bolting on mobile after you've gone down the "visually design in photoshop and get approval workflow process" that costs extra. [...]

Dear all

Many thanks for all those responses on and off-list.

Unsurprisingly most of you are on track with RWD.

As you may have guessed I am mid-planning our site redevelopment and am probably my poll cat 3 stage. Busy developing a business case to give to the powers that be in the near future. Your data will be very useful. [...]

FW: Digitizing Exhibition Catalogs

Museum Computer Group (MCG, UK) list feed - July 19, 2013 - 12:21pm

Hi Sara,
I was responsible for the project that Trevor mentioned below, to digitise and publish to the web the early exhibition catalogues of the Royal Academy of Arts Winter Exhibition catalogues.

We undertook the project in two stages. In the first stage we digitised the catalogues from their inception in 1870 through to 1913. In addition to scanning the catalogues in their entirety, we used Optical Character Recognition software (OCR), to make a machine readable version of the text. At the same time, we worked with the RA Collections website designer, System Simulation Ltd, to develop a simple search [...]

Oh indeed - beware the printed page mock up with neatly lined up boxes of "Lorem Ipsum" that falls apart horribly once you actually place some real content in the live site!

I'd also be prepared to be asked for all your content (or at least real working examples) up front.

RWD is content driven, it's not about making pictures of websites in Photoshop at different window widths and then pouring content into it. [...]

One word of advice - as if it really needs stating at all - whatever you do: if you are going to do RWD make sure you hire someone with past experience.

I'd also be interested in asking a prospective tender what their development environment looks like.

Whatever the issues it looks like a nice clean site - I see you used Twitter Bootstrap to address the RWD.

Hi John,

First up, I have to agree with Mike - not considering this for two years from now, or even longer, is something to think very hard about!

We knew early in 2012 that we had to do this . Our mobile traffic had more or less doubled in a year. Mobile now is 40% of all traffic to our visitor information pages, which are a core section for mobile users out and about. I expect this to rise above 50% within a year, possibly this calendar year. Around a quarter of our visitors are now on mobile, so we are now considering our approach to a mobile site for build in next 6 months. It will most likely be a responsive site.

As with Mike's practice, our policy at Surface Impression is to make new sites mobile device friendly (mostly using responsive design) - even if it's not on the brief. We've been experimenting with a number of techniques to try to get responsive to both be aesthetically pleasing and effective/sustainable to build and manage. Mixing in custom code with the media queries etc to deal with image sizes (swapping in lower res versions) etc helps a lot. [...]

At Southbank Centre our site is completely responsive.

However this is not without issue. There is a feeling, which needs validating, that the site is too image led and does not serve desktops particularly well.

Nevertheless we have seen a massive increase in mobile transactions since making the move in to a responsive site in January. [...]

Hey John

Everything we do for clients now is responsive: there's very little point in not. (this is all Wordpress btw, not that it makes any difference..).

We've also gone back and retrofitted a couple of sites, which is a bit more painful but mostly doable.

I'd say anyone in category 3 and definitely anyone in category 4 should probably think quite hard :-) [...]
