Re: Data Asset Management Systems for images query

May 14, 2013 - 7:52am

Hi Strephon,

Have you spoken with the folks at the Archaeological Data Service in York? They have lots of facilities in place for picture hosting.

I'm not sure about costs or anything like that, but I could pass you names of people if that would be helpful.

Cheers,
Chris

Data Asset Management Systems for images query

May 14, 2013 - 7:28am

I have query about Data Asset Management Systems for images.

I work for a commercial archaeological company (50->100 employees) and I am charged, along with our IT specialist Graham Sherwood, to look for a system that will open up our digital photo server to our office based staff of about 35 employees. At the moment we just store photos on a backed up server, in folders, according to which archaeological project or site that they belong to. It’s a linear system that is difficult to search unless you already know where to find what you’re looking for. What we would [...]

May 11, 2013 - 10:03am

Giving up the archive?

Reflections on the creation, examination and dissemination of arts organisations’ archives.
1 July 2013, White Cube Gallery, Bermondsey SE1 3TQ

Many arts organisations are interested in locating and exploring their archival heritage. What are the driving forces behind this interest? How much archive material survives, where and in what condition? What can archives tell us about the history of these organisations and how important are they to their contemporary activities? This study day aims to explore these questions, providing reflections and case studies from academics, curators, artists and archivists. [...]

Re: FW: Invitation to participate in the EC funded PATHS project

May 10, 2013 - 8:27am

Hi Tehmina,

Just to come back to you about PATHS, Collections Trust hasn't been involved, but there's a handy little video at http://www.paths-project.eu/ which might help.

The demonstrator seems to be down at the moment, but from the video it looks as though the idea is to use semantics to provide an interface which allows users to explore your collections data. [...]

Re: Digital Asset File Naming

May 10, 2013 - 6:36am

hi Richard

Having most permutations in play here we are still finessing our
thinking on this.. but I think I'd say:
- directory and folder structures should be simple and sensible and
considered transistionary (i.e. no other solution is ready so we have
tons of stuff in dir/files structures)
- with that in mind try to encourage various specialists who are
creating this content to use dir/file structures that, like you have
done, can be machine processed later into sensible (very simple)
metadata for import to a DAM, and that make sense in their context (the
specialists), often this means [...]

Re: Digital Asset File Naming

May 9, 2013 - 5:45pm

After the last discussion of DAMs on this list :-) , I was enthused to
write a little CGI program which took a database name, file name and
primary key as parameters, ferreted around inside the relevant database
record, and then returned the first image which was referenced therein.

This program was written primarily with a view to experimenting with
dynamic re-sizing of the image (controlled by yet more parameters),
checking of rights, etc. However, it also raised the possibility of
adopting a "Linked Data" approach to image access. This involves
decoupling the physical filename (which you still need to [...]

Re: Collections online and analytics (me again)

May 9, 2013 - 11:47am

Hmm...I tend to find that understanding the question often provides the solution ;) !

Being able to ask a technical question in non-technical terms is a great gift and I for one have found that if doing that enables you to latch on to a "lateral thinker" then you are nearly home and dry! [...]

Re: Digital Asset File Naming

May 9, 2013 - 9:55am

Hi Tony

Very briefly for a response about metadata standards ....

For metadata schema - Murtha Baca of the Getty Institute has done a fantastic crosswalk of the main metadata standards for cultural content. You can find it ( and the downloadable PDF ) at http://www.getty.edu/research/publications/electronic_publications/intrometadata/crosswalks.html.

IPTC standards are also critical, of course. [...]

Digital Asset File Naming

May 9, 2013 - 5:51am

Hello All,
Would any of you be in a position to offer up examples of digital asset file naming schema/protocols/conventions that you use? We are looking to implement an DAM system and one of the first tasks is to review the existing schema.
I have read the Spectrum DAM guidance and the links contained in that document. I also have the metadata working group guidelines too.
Best regards
Tony Harris

listening post for a gallery interactive - suppliers?

May 8, 2013 - 10:58am

Good afternoon,

I have just joined the list so apologies if this has been asked many times before! I am designing a gallery interactive which is a Georgian repro desk with drawers that will house various activities. I would like to have a sound element in one of the drawers that allows visitors to select a bird call and listen to it. I am thinking of 4 push buttons to select a sound then either a handheld device to listen through or a speaker inside the unit. I have seen headphones or a phone at various places and recently saw [...]

Dear All,

A full audio record of 'Making Sound Objects', the British Forum for Ethnomusicology's 2012 Annual One Day Conference, is now available to listen to via SoundCloud. The conference, convened by Dr Noel Lobley and hosted at the Pitt Rivers Museum on November 24th 2012, attracted over 100 participants, with as many again unable to attend due to space limitations. The interdisciplinary conference was designed to expand conversations between ethnomusicology, sound studies and sound curation. The content was very diverse, ranging from the practical role of music and archives in Cambodia to the use of reel to reel [...]

Fwd: FW: Invitation to participate in the EC funded PATHS project

May 8, 2013 - 4:55am

Anyone know more about this? Nick P?

Is this trying to do what Creative Spaces in the UK failed to achieve with
Europeana content?

There's so much verbiage to read through, it's not exactly clear what it's
all about so could be accidentally missing something good.

Any ideas?

Tehmina.
