Re: Photographing art high on a wall
5 hours 21 min agoHi Allun,
Some years back we were partners in an EU-funded project, Vitra, that
created a device for exactly this purpose. See
http://www.ssl.co.uk/ixbin/indexplus?record=ART166
I last heard of the robotic camera platform at the University of the
Arts. Lindsay Macdonald was the project leader, it could be worth
contacting him, I believe he is now at University College London. [...]

Re: Photographing art high on a wall [Scanned]
5 hours 27 min agoHi Alun
Oh goody - quadcopters, a topic I can enthuse about...
A quad (or hex/octo) would be a good platform but it does depend on the quality of the photo you require. Most low-cost quads would not be stable enough to allow for high quality stills, but would be perfectly adequate for inspection purposes. You'd need to find someone with a bigger quad (or hex/octo) rig to provide a more stable platform if you want high res. Plus if you are going to pay them, then (I think) they have to have an operating license. [...]

Re: Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned]
5 hours 32 min agoHi John
We updated our website last August and yes we did go for an RWD site.
www.wolverhamptonart.org.uk
We've tested it out on several different devices and there are some small things we will probably change in the future once we have done some proper user satisfaction studies but overall we are pleased with the way it works on mobile devices. [...]

The Day of Archaeology 2013
6 hours 23 min ago**Apologies for cross-posting!**
This coming Friday, 26th July, sees the launch of the 3rd annual Day of Archaeology www.dayofarchaeology.com. The Day of Archaeology digital project demonstrates the wide variety of work our profession undertakes day-to-day across the globe through contributions to the website that describe a 'day in the life' of archaeological professionals and volunteers working in all aspects of archaeology. The project aims to raise public awareness of the relevance and importance of archaeology to the modern world and provide an insight into the range of activities archaeologists undertake. [...]

Re: Photographing art high on a wall
July 21, 2013 - 5:57pmDear Alun,
As current Chair of the UK museum photography group (AHFAP) with 200 members across the UK, could I help you find a suitable solution? If you wish you can either post a message to our JISC list (www.Jiscmail.ac.uk/ahfap) or contact me off list.
I personally have photographed works of art quite high up, around first floor height using a Bembo 1 tripod, but there are other solutions it just depends on how high you need to go.
Best regards

Re: Photographing art high on a wall
July 21, 2013 - 3:59pmHi Alun,
If the object is two dimensional you will probably be able to take the
picture from below and 'distort' it in Photoshop afterwards to correct the
skew.
For objects behind glass, that also enables a surprising 'trick of the
trade' that dramatically reduces the effects of reflections.
Alternatively there are perspective control lenses but I don't think
anything that exotic should be necessary. [...]

Consider also those remote controlled "toy" helicopters, which can
carry a camera:

Photographing art high on a wall
July 21, 2013 - 7:12amDear all,
I am looking for examples of photographers digitising art, which is high on a wall. This could be from a cherry-picker, however the image I know I have seen in the recent past is photographers using a camera mounted on an extendible pole. Maybe this is an image of National Trust conservators at work, or some Wiki Loves Public Art volunteers at work. The camera would be controlled remotely from a laptop, tethered on the floor. [...]

It should be said that if you *start* out planning a responsive web design it costs no more.
It's retrofitting or bolting on mobile after you've gone down the "visually design in photoshop and get approval workflow process" that costs extra. [...]

July 19, 2013 - 12:41pmDear all
Many thanks for all those responses on and off-list.
Unsurprisingly most of you are on track with RWD.
As you may have guessed I am mid-planning our site redevelopment and am probably my poll cat 3 stage. Busy developing a business case to give to the powers that be in the near future. Your data will be very useful. [...]

FW: Digitizing Exhibition Catalogs
July 19, 2013 - 12:21pmHi Sara,
I was responsible for the project that Trevor mentioned below, to digitise and publish to the web the early exhibition catalogues of the Royal Academy of Arts Winter Exhibition catalogues.
We undertook the project in two stages. In the first stage we digitised the catalogues from their inception in 1870 through to 1913. In addition to scanning the catalogues in their entirety, we used Optical Character Recognition software (OCR), to make a machine readable version of the text. At the same time, we worked with the RA Collections website designer, System Simulation Ltd, to develop a simple search [...]

Re: Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned]
July 19, 2013 - 5:39amOh indeed - beware the printed page mock up with neatly lined up boxes of "Lorem Ipsum" that falls apart horribly once you actually place some real content in the live site!

I'd also be prepared to be asked for all your content (or at least real working examples) up front.
RWD is content driven, it's not about making pictures of websites in Photoshop at different window widths and then pouring content into it. [...]

Re: Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned]
July 19, 2013 - 4:45amOne word of advice - as if it really needs stating at all - whatever you do: if you are going to do RWD make sure you hire someone with past experience.
I'd also be interested in asking a prospective tender what their development environment looks like.

Re: Responsive web design straw poll
July 19, 2013 - 3:08amHi John,
First up, I have to agree with Mike - not considering this for two years from now, or even longer, is something to think very hard about!
We knew early in 2012 that we had to do this . Our mobile traffic had more or less doubled in a year. Mobile now is 40% of all traffic to our visitor information pages, which are a core section for mobile users out and about. I expect this to rise above 50% within a year, possibly this calendar year.
