Re: DAM systems integration with CMS databases
April 15, 2013 - 7:55amHi Tony,
We've recently implemented EMu as our CMS to manage Special Collections material at the University Library.
We already have a 'DAM' system, LUNA. We are sharing the metadata and thumbnail images from one of our LUNA manuscripts collections with EMu via OAI-PMH. Effectively, we've imported this entire collection into EMu's Catalogue Module (which we customised to accommodate manuscripts), but will be keeping the LUNA collection as the main user interface. Re: CIDOC CRM Semantic Search
April 15, 2013 - 7:26amThanks Dominic.
I have to say, that's a damn fine demo. It could do with a voice-over just to make it a bit more friendly, but even silently it does show some pretty awesome functionality.
I guess the question is: how does the effort required to get to here match against the actual use cases? I mean, it's totally brilliant for people to be able to search by all these facets but do we know that people actually *want* to search by all these facets? And I mean *normal* people, not just researchers and academics.. [...]

CIDOC CRM Semantic Search
April 13, 2013 - 9:59amHi All, A quick video of a search system using context (condensed from CIDOC CRM relationships) to create a balance of precision and recall. http://youtu.be/HbYgaxctGV8 Some of the Rembrandt data you see is from the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (Rembrandt database). The majority of data is from the British Museum. Other datasets to be harmonised and added in due course. Cheers, Dominic

April 10, 2013 - 3:58pmI aim to get a draft of the BM CRM manual to an initial groups of reviewers as soon as possible.
If you like to review the initial draft then please email me at doldman@thebritishmuseum.ac.uk and use the subject header - CRM document.
It has taken a little longer than I thought to finish it, and I apologise to anyone who I told it would be available before now, but it should be ready as a discussion draft, in the next week or so. [...]

Access to time-warp rooms
April 10, 2013 - 11:57amDear All,
A museum in my area is looking to develop a building on their site which has various rooms laid out as they would have been when a local family was living there in the Victorian period. Currently the rooms are partitioned off with a wall surmounted by glass which goes to the ceiling. [...]

Re: MCG Digest - 8 Apr 2013 to 9 Apr 2013 [wallace sticky views]
April 10, 2013 - 1:53amHi Phoebe,
I had a quick peek on the train, and it seems to work fine on my PC without needing a plugin (or if it does, I must have had it already)
My 10 minute observations are:
- does what I expected. You can see right round the room
- on my PC the navigation worked as I expected using touch screen (so if I swipe left it pans right as I was expecting it to. )
- I expected pinch zoom, but it didn't undrestand that and I ended up looking at the intriguing plughole fisheye view that [...]

Re: MCG Digest - 7 Apr 2013 to 8 Apr 2013 (#2013-70) [ re online Surveys]
April 9, 2013 - 4:49amYes google docs is a cheap and cheery alternative. Mike is right to check that people have access, but assuming your audience does, Google is very good as you have the spreadsheet tools etc.
Did you know it can be pimped too. If you create a spreadsheet, and set up the standard form, you can then use the html for the form control ids and submit code path as the basis for your own form that you can host elsewhere. I have managed to get this to work to add html5 sliders and other features that control data entry values [...]

Test the Wallace Collection's StickyWorld!
April 8, 2013 - 12:24pmDear MCGers,
Here at the Wallace Collection we have been working on one of the
projects sponsored by ICTomorrow, aimed developing new digital tools for
the cultural sector. For the last 8 months we have been working with the
team at StickyWorld. Their platform allows organisations to publish more
interactive slideshows and 360 virtual tours, and to invite online
audiences to comment and ask questions by leaving comments in virtual
sticky notes on the slides. [...]

Re: online surveys
April 8, 2013 - 10:12amHi Gemma
Depending on your audience, have a look at Google Forms / spreadsheets. Free, and lots of responses allowed, plus you can do some nice stuff with the analysis / flow through the form if you need to.
Reason I mention audience is there are still some local authorities / museums who prevent access to GDocs. Fools. [...]

Re: online surveys
April 8, 2013 - 10:12amDepending on what your objectives are and how you'll be deploying the
survey, I've found socialsci to be a decent tool. However, many of these
free online survey sites do not display the same across platforms and do
not have the same usability as survey monkey and wufoo (my favourite).
Cheers,
Monae

online surveys
April 8, 2013 - 9:58amHello MCGers
I have a question which I'm hoping some of you can help with. I want to set up an online survey using a free service, however SurveyMonkey's free offer limits the number of questions and does not provide the option to download results.
I've come across some other providers and I wondered if you had an opinion on

MOOCs and Museums
April 7, 2013 - 10:49amApologies for cross-posting.
Dear all,
I am about to start some research into whether museums should start engaging
with the recent phenomenon known as MOOCs. This is to be part of a MOOC I'm
doing with the Open University into Open Learning.
I'm sure that most of you know what MOOCs are but just in case... [...]
