Re: Wall-mounted tablets

June 20, 2013 - 11:12am

Hi, sarah,

I don't know if this is a relevant as it seems you're looking for a hardware solution, but I saw a fantastic art installation at Digital Shoreditch a few weeks ago, made by Full Circle Interactive which is available as an App for iPhone, available on iTunes, called In Limbo which could be a software solution for your problem! Professional Green Screen equipment

June 20, 2013 - 11:03am

Hello everybody. I am currently looking at upgrading our green screen equipment and was hoping to see if anybody knew about any professional sellers. Anything suggested is most welcome as I am not happy with the stuff I have currently seen.

Big thank you everyone who has sent suggestions I am currently testing out and looking through your suggestions. I am trying to steer clear as much as possible from QR codes (I only want to go to that if no other solution presents itself). Basically if anybody has got anything along those lines even if it is a beta test I would be grateful.

Re: Wall-mounted tablets

June 20, 2013 - 10:45am

Hi Sarah

There are some interesting touch screen monitors that run android "out of the box" so you don't need to connect a computer to them to run stuff. They can be screwed directly to the wall using a standard monitor/TV mount and work surprisingly well. Plus they're big - 22" or so so good for access. [...]

Wall-mounted tablets

June 20, 2013 - 10:18am

Hi everyone,

Sorry for cross-posting.

I'm currently looking into providing a 360 navigable tour of the cinema in
our foyer, for those who can't get up our old steep steps to see the
upstairs part of the building. I'm investigating various different
solutions, one of which is to have a tablet which is mounted into some kind
of wall bracket (in an attempt to make it less walk-off-with-able). Has
anyone out there done anything similar, and could recommend a tablet and/or
bracket? I'd prefer a cheaper tablet rather than an iPad - I don't think our
budget really stretches to [...]

Final reminder - ISKO UK conference 8/9 July "Knowledge Organization - Pushing the Boundaries"

June 20, 2013 - 5:08am

Dear list members

This is your final reminder to book a place at the ISKO-UK July conference, “Knowledge Organization - Pushing the Boundaries”, while there are still a few remaining places. In tough economic times, many events around us are getting cancelled for lack of subscribers. But ISKO-UK has stuck with affordable prices, and is still the best place to keep up-to-date and compare notes with people who share an interest in knowledge organization. See the action-packed programme at . [...]

New Business Development role at RBG Kew

June 18, 2013 - 7:29am

Can I bring to your attention a new post at Kew Gardens. We are looking for an individual with experience of Market Research/Business Development, preferably for information products/services.

Medicinal Plant Names Services (MPNS) seeks to support professionals and researchers working in health, pharmacovigilance and pharmaceutical sectors to communicate more effectively re herbal ingredients and medicinal plants. MPNS is establishing a global definitive index to the multiple names (scientific, pharmacopoeia or common) that are inconsistently used for medicinal plants throughout the world. This authoritative online resource is also being used to underpin novel information services tailored to the practical needs of [...]

New digitisation post at RBG Kew

June 18, 2013 - 5:55am

List members might be interested in a new Project Manager post just advertised at Kew.

The Kew Herbarium Digitisation project is driving forward plans to significantly enhance access to Kew’s world class herbarium specimen collections through digital imaging and data capture. The project will enable improved management and protection of the collections alongside opportunities for novel scientific analyses as a result of extensive digital cataloguing of the collections. Hi there,

I've been meaning to check this one out for a while. It's advertising based, but I've heard they'd be interested in heritage projects.

Crowdfunding examples in large organisations?

June 18, 2013 - 4:33am

Hi all

I was chatting with someone the other day about a potential new
project and it struck me that crowdfunding would be perfect for it.
But it got me wondering, are there any good examples of successful
crowdfunding within larger organisations, and/or have people faced
institutional resistance when there is already very active fundraising
through more 'traditional' means? [...]

Derby Museums Digital Engagement Strategy

June 18, 2013 - 3:47am

Dear MCGers,

I know that many of you will currently be working on Digital Engagement
Strategies, or the integration of Digital into your overall Strategic
Planning. We're keen to learn more about how UK museums are approaching
this process, and as part of this Jonathan Wallis at Derby Museums has
kindly allowed us to share the Digital Engagement Strategy which they
have developed with support from Rippleffect.com. [...]

Re: An app scanner that triggers audio messages.

Aye, +1 to QR.

I think image recognition might be too much like hard work.

Having said that, I've heard good things about http://www.kooaba.com/ which offers cloud-based image processing. But I still think you might be making it too hard - you'd have to have good network access, wait for the roundtrip to the Kooaba API, and you'd be assuming good light conditions etc etc. [...]

Re: An app scanner that triggers audio messages.

We are running a couple of augmented reality trials with Layar and
Aurasma at York Museums Trust. Both of these apps have their
limitiations but they allow the visitor to trigger audio and video using
the museum object itself - as opposed to a QR code.

They are, however, far from perfect.

Hi Ben,

These guys….http://www.guideid.co.uk/site/home…have developed some fairly innovative ways of using interactive audio interpretation and can pretty much get it to do whatever you want! It can work as an app or a handheld device for this that don't own smartphone/tablets.
Thanks,
Heather

Please complete the MA Mobile Survey 2013

June 17, 2013 - 10:30am

Hi all - apologies for cross postings.

The Museums Association's 2013 Mobile Survey is now online - http://mus.ms/mamobile2013

We had a really good response last year, so I hope that the 2013 survey provides an updated benchmark for museums in the UK.

It would be fantastic if you could complete the survey or pass it on to the appropriate person in your organisation - and Tweet the link if you’re so inclined. [...]

Re; MCG website is now mobile responsive (3)

June 13, 2013 - 3:38pm

Thanks to people for some great feedback. All positive which is very good to hear. Also some useful feedback on specific things to maybe look at - just what beta is for :)

I have tweaked a few specific things that were raised:
The white space to either side of the content tables has been reduced a bit (thanks Mike)
I've adjusted the positioning of search box/submit as these overlapped on some screen sizes (thanks Nick) [...]
