Examples of changed collections policies
July 16, 2013 - 7:51amDoes anyone have any examples of how collections policies have been changed as a result of UGC or crowdsourcing activities? I.e. members of the public have allowed a museum/archive to scan old photos, letters, etc, and display these online or accession the scans, and how the collections policy was changed to allow this. Re: Introducing Textal, text analysis app
July 15, 2013 - 3:48pmLet me know when there's an API - I've got a project I'd love to try it on :)
If anyone wants to get a flavour for the variety of responses and
doesn't have an iPhone I'd recommend the random feature on the website
- http://www.textal.org/random
Jumping through a couple of inevitable look-ups of people's own names
on Twitter searches, I quickly stumbled across this Alice In
Wonderland text from Gutenberg

Re: Introducing Textal, text analysis app
July 15, 2013 - 11:30amThanks all!
All of the processing is server side - and we will be releasing this as an
API for others to use soon. The app is a skin that connects to the back
end, and we started with iOS as we knew how to do that. We're a small team
with a miniscule budget (its me, and two early career researchers, all with
day jobs doing this in our spare time, but it helps that we have servers at
UCL we can crank this through!). If it takes off, we'll learn how to do
Android too. Part of this [...]

Re: Introducing Textal, text analysis app
July 15, 2013 - 5:40amHI Melissa
I would echo Mike's comments; an enjoyable engaging (especially if you're a word nerd) app, but why just an IOS app? Did you consider a web app and an Android version?
I did have trouble setting Twitter as the text source, whatever I typed got no results.
Thanks
Nick Stevens

Re: Introducing Textal, text analysis app
July 15, 2013 - 5:28am+1 to what Mike said, especially as I don't have an iPhone so could
only be teased by nice looking screengrabs! And are there any plans
for an API?

July 15, 2013 - 5:08amHi Melissa
Cool app - thanks, have downloaded and had a play. It works well, looks nice and is fun to use.
I'm wondering though whether you could expand on why you chose to implement it as a mobile app? The functionality and usability seems much more web-app like to me - things like entering a URL, viewing an output on a small screen etc - wouldn't this be better off as a pure web app? [...]

[MuseomixUK] Call for Applicants closes July 15th
July 12, 2013 - 6:07pmI'm sending this long email to hopefully answer the questions I've been
getting online.
*Closing date for Applicants is JULY 15th*
I'm Project Coordinator for Museomix UK, the only global Museomix happening
in the UK and the only one that's in English (4 locations in France, 1 in
Quebec and us). The concept is not easy to explain as it's an experience,
not an event (although I tend to use both words). [...]

Introducing Textal, text analysis app
July 12, 2013 - 2:48pmHi folks,
I thought that some of you may be interested in hearing about our new
iPhone app, Textal, which is now up for download for free in the app store!
Textal is a free smartphone app for iOS that allows users to analyze
documents, web pages and tweet streams, exploring the relationships between
words in the text via an intuitive word cloud interface. The app generates
visualizations and statics that can be shared without effort, which makes
it a fun and useful tool for both research and play, bridging the gap
between text analysis and mobile computing. [...]

Yes I had, although clearly not as thoroughly as I thought. I don't remember the last two pages on firewalls... So thank you for reminding me about that one.
Cheers
Tony

Mailchimp & Institutional spam filter advice
July 8, 2013 - 11:56amDear All,
Any general advice on how to get through institutional spam filters when using Mailchimp? I know Mailchimp has various tools for spam filters which I have used already, but are there any good guides to syntax or avoiding certain phrases or words?
For those that are rightly worried I can confirm this request is not to enable me to start a spamming career, it's just I am having a little trouble with an e-newsletter for a professional association. [...]
