Your Background

Your Biography

I am a lecturer in the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies at Newcastle University, UK. My research is in the field of digital media in the museum and heritage sector with a particular emphasis on the study and understanding of users in these contexts. I am particularly interested in design methods which allow digital media applications to support museum interpretation and exhibition development through user engagement and contribution.

My doctoral research focused on the study of online and on-site museum visits mediated by 3D environments and handheld devices. More recently, I have carried research on the use of amateur, user contributed photography in museum exhibitions. I supervise doctoral research on ‘Museum Memories Online’ and on ‘Flickr: The Commons’, which look at the dynamics of user participation, institutional authorship and moderation in user contributed content online. I have been involved in research at the Universities of Leicester (Museum Studies), Nottingham (Mixed Reality Lab) and Glasgow (Equator IRC) and in curatorial projects in Greece and the UK. My work has been published in conferences such as Museums and the Web, Design of Interactive Systems (DIS), Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), and Creativity and Cognition (C&C). Recent research has been supported by grants from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and One NorthEast.
