I am currently putting together a research proposal for an MA dissertation on museums and the web. I am interested in the Steve. museums project and wondered if anyone knew of any similar experiments taking place in England. I know a lot of museums are going down the digitising route, but are any allowing feedback from their audience? I'd appreciate any info anyone has. Other European sites would be of interest too. Thanks, and looking forward to some interesting conversations!

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/yvonne_hellinhobbs/yvonne_hellinhobbs#comments England experiments museums and the web research results folksonomy http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10654 Sat, 21 Feb 2009 13:01:44 +0000 Yvonne Hellin-Hobbs 10654 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com steve.museum research report available: Tagging, Folksonomy and Art Museums http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/stevemuseum_research_report_available_tagging_fo
Tagging, Folksonomy and Art Museums: Results of steve.museum’s research

J. The steve.museum research project studied tagging and the relationship of the resulting folksonomy to professionally created museum documentation. A variety of research questions were proposed, and methods for answering them explored. Works of art were assembled to be tagged, a tagger was deployed, and tagging encouraged. A folksonomy of 36,981 terms was gathered, comprising 11,944 terms in 31,031 term/work pairs. The analysis of the tagging of these works – and the assembled folksonomy – is reported here, and further work described.

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/stevemuseum_research_report_available_tagging_fo#comments access Art Museums folksonomy Museums research research report search log analysis steve.museum tagging user generated content vocabulary analysis folksonomy http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10646 Tue, 03 Feb 2009 21:31:34 +0000 jtrant 10646 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com New Article: Tagging, Folksonomy and Art Museums: Early Experiments and Ongoing Research http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/new_article_tagging_folksonomy_and_art_museums_e
Abstract

Tagging has proven attractive to art museums as a means of enhancing the indexing of online collections. Methods of researching the contribution of social tagging and folksonomy are described, and outstanding research questions are presented. This is a new area of research, where theoretical perspectives and relevant research methods are only now being defined. This paper provides a framework for the study of folksonomy, tagging and social tagging systems. Three broad approaches are identified, focusing first, on the folksonomy itself (and the role of tags in indexing and retrieval); secondly, on tagging (and the behaviour of users); and thirdly, on the nature of social tagging systems (as socio-technical frameworks).

J Trant, Studying Social Tagging and Folksonomy: A Review and Framework, Journal of Digital Information, Vol 10, No 1 (2009) available at http://journals.tdl.org/jodi/article/view/269/278

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/new_article_studying_social_tagging_and_folksono#comments article conceptual framework folksonomy literature review publication research tagging folksonomy research http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10456 Sat, 10 Jan 2009 21:25:05 +0000 jtrant 10456 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com LC Flickr Commons Report Available http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/lc_flickr_commons_report_available
the Library of Congress has made a detailed report of their experiments with the Flickr Commons available on their web site at http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/flickr_pilot.html

They note the following in their summary:

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/lc_flickr_commons_report_available#comments commons Flickr folksonomy library of congress report research tagging folksonomy research http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10418 Thu, 11 Dec 2008 22:33:11 +0000 jtrant 10418 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com there's no such thing as 'museum content' http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/theres_no_such_thing_museum_content
There's a sentence from the Museums and the Web 2008 Proceedings that keeps coming back to me, as i think about things as wide-ranging as tag analysis for steve.museum, and the nature of professional training in museums, archives and libraries.

When discussing the use of museum-materials posted on YouTube a group of museum professionals noted that “the people watching this were not searching for ‘museum’ content; they were searching for "calligraphy" content” (Alexander et al., 2008).

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/theres_no_such_thing_museum_content#comments Museums user generated content users Web2.0 folksonomy research http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10406 Sat, 22 Nov 2008 23:37:30 +0000 jtrant 10406 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com upcoming presentation: steve.museum research results @ mcn http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/upcoming_presentation_stevemuseum_research_resul
as principal investigator of the steve.museum IMLS research grant, wrapping up this december, i'll be presenting further results from our tagging study at the upcoming museum computer network conference:

Friday November 14, 2008
Grand Hyatt, Washington, DC

Should You Care about Social Tagging? This work is more formally presented in other steve papers (see below).

that gap exists partially because our documentation standards are theoretical; designed by and for professionals to serve museum functions. i've participated in many initiatives that explored aspects of access to collections – CHIN, FDA, AITF/CDWA, CIDOC, MESL, AMICO – winner take all in the aconymble contest – and don't dispute this as a valid first premise. it's a place we had to start from, but it may not put us in a good position to support public access.

museum data is still seldom shared beyond the bounds of local systems; and when it is, in early cases like MESL or building The AMICO Library, we discover that institutions adapt standards, rather than adopting them. merging data from disparate sources is hard. we compromise on what has to be merged and end up with thin (lowest common denominator) descriptions that may not be adequate for differentiation between similar objects, and may not support user needs.

i'm more convinced, since the discussion with seb and mike about the contribution of tags, that we need to look at the types of terms we're getting as tags and the types of terms searched, when we build on my preliminary analysis of Guggenheim search logs as part of the steve.museum term analysis.

that way, we'll be able to learn a bit more about the relationship between tag, searches, and documentation structures, and do it within the context of searchers' needs.

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/social_tagging_and_access_to_collections_podcast#comments access Art Museums collections folksonomy steve.museum tagging folksonomy research http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/9654 Tue, 06 Nov 2007 17:49:36 +0000 jtrant 9654 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com steve.museum paper for ichim07 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/steve_museum_paper_for_ichim07

we've just released the steve.museum paper that provides background to the demonstration Susan Chun will be giving at ICHIM07. it begins to present the methods for steve.museum's IMLS-funded national leadership grant (research), focussing on our data collection strategy and the steve tagger.

it also includes some preliminary results about attitudes to tagging amongst museum staff, and early analyses of tags collected. Early results in prototype tests are holding up.
