This demonstration will show how the San Diego Air and Space Museum (SDASM)&nbsp;has successfully digitized and placed on Flickr tens of thousands of images.&nbsp; The SDASM archival team of Alan Renga and Katrina Pescador were able to complete this enormous task with a new highly specialized rapid capture station, purchased by BPOC as part of its mission to implement new technology to provide increased visitor access and participation. More than 40,000 images have been digitized from the photography collection of the SDASM’s archive using the rapid capture station since January of 2010. In May, the first batch of photographs were uploaded to Flickr and since then more than 100,000 images (including images which had been digitized during the past decade) from the collection have been posted. As a result, this collection has drawn close to a million and a half visits, eight times the normal traffic to the Museum’s site.&nbsp; The demonstration will include images of the rapid capture station and will show the Flickr site.&nbsp; SDASM staff members will be on hand to talk about planning, results and challenges that were encountered. The SDASM staff will also talk about and demonstrate a similar project they are undertaking involving the digitization of their 16mm films, which are being put on a YouTube nonprofit partnership channel.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/alanrenga" class="username" title="View Alan&#039;s profile.">Alan Renga</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/accelerating_in_flight_access_to_a_collect_0#comments MW2011 aviation digital photos digitization films flikr social media youtube http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13169 Tue, 21 Dec 2010 18:27:43 +0000 alanrenga 13169 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Technologies, like Museums, are Social http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/technologies_museums_are_social <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/1661">Bearman, D.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant J.</a></span> (2008).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/technologies_museums_are_social">Technologies, like Museums, are Social</a>. </span> <u>Museums and the Web 2008. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fconference.archimuse.com&amp;rft.title=Technologies%2C+like+Museums%2C+are+Social&amp;rft.isbn=1-885626-36-x&amp;rft.date=2008&amp;rft.aulast=Bearman&amp;rft.aufirst=David&amp;rft.au=Trant%2C+Jennifer&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Montr%C3%A9al%2C+Qu%C3%A9bec%2C+Canada+April+9-12%2C+2008&amp;rft_id=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archimuse.com%2Fpublishing%2Fmw_2008_intro.html"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/technologies_museums_are_social#comments MW MW2008 evaluation Facebook flickr introduction location-aware services open content open source open standards openness pda's personalization Semantic Web social technologies sustaining communities user contributed content Web history youtube evaluation facebook Flickr intro introduction location-aware services open content open source open standards openness organizational change pda's Personalization semantic web social technologies sustaining communities user contributed content Web history Youtube http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10308 Wed, 01 Oct 2008 22:03:08 +0000 jtrant 10308 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com
