Are the standard web and desktop interfaces for accessing digital collections adequate for understanding these collections? Popular interfaces for showing images and video such as list, gallery, grid, and slide do now allow us to see the contents of a whole collection. These interfaces usually only display a few items at a time, regardless of whether you are in a browsing mode, or in a search mode. Because we are not able to see a collection as a whole, we can’t compare sets images or videos to each other, notice patterns of change over time, or understand parts of the collection in relation to the whole.</p> <p>Graphing and visualization tools offer a range of visual techniques designed to reveal patterns in data. However, these tools have their own limitations. A key principle, which underlies the creation of graphs and information visualizations, is the representation of data using points, bars, lines, and similar graphical primitives. This principle has remained unchanged from the earliest statistical graphics of the early 19th century to contemporary interactive visualization software which can work with large data sets. Although such representations make clear the relationships in a data set, they also hide the objects behind the data from the user.</p> <p><span> </span>Since 2008, our lab (Software Studies Initiative, <a href="http://www.softwarestudies.com">http://www.softwarestudies.com</a>) at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has been developing visual techniques that combine the strengths of media viewing applications and graphing and visualization applications. Like the latter, they create graphs to show relationships and patterns in a data set. However, while plot making software can only display data as points, lines or other graphic primitives, our software can show all the images in a collection superimposed on a graph. We call this method “media visualization.”</p> <p><span></span>To date, we have already successfully applied our techniques to artworks, photos&nbsp;films, video games, comics, magazines, books,<strong> </strong>and other media content.&nbsp;Examples include all paintings by van Gogh, one million pages from manga series, hundreds of thousands of pages from 19th century American newspapers, and hundreds of hours of video gameplay. Our past and present collaborators include&nbsp;Getty Museum, Library of Congress, Austrian Film Museum, Magnum Photos, Netherlands Institute for Sound and Image&nbsp;and other institutions who are interested in using our methodology with their media collections. Starting in the Fall 2011, we are releasing our fully documented tools we developed under open source license.<span></span></p> <p>In our demonstration, we will show the examples of our visualization and explain our key techniques for creating media visualizations.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/demonstrations/mw2012_demonstrations_1">MW2012 Demonstrations I</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://lab.softwarestudies.com/2008/09/cultural-analytics.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://lab.softwarestudies.com/2008/09/cultural-analytics.html</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/lev_manovich" class="username" title="View Lev&#039;s profile.">Lev Manovich</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/new_techniques_for_visualizing_large_image_a#comments MW2012 analytics digital image processing images UCSD video visualization http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15928 Sat, 31 Dec 2011 22:49:02 +0000 Lev Manovich 15928 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Delivering Gallery Interactives using Web Technologies http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/delivering_gallery_interactives_using_web_technologie <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/2026">Bates, E.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/delivering_gallery_interactives_using_web_technologie">Delivering Gallery Interactives using Web Technologies</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web 2010. Created for the special exhibition <em>Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance</em> at the Asian Art Museum,&nbsp;San Francisco.</p> <p>When first envisioning the special exhibition, <em>Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance</em>, (on view at the Asian Art Museum February 25 through September 11, 2011) associate curator of Southeast Asian art Natasha Reichle wanted to collaborate with education staff to enhance the ritual and performing arts aspects of the exhibition. In addition to a robust series of live programs, the team set out to develop a variety of videos to bring the living culture of Bali to life.</p> <p>Martin Percy collaborated with Reichle and education director Deborah Clearwaters to create&nbsp;<span>www.BaliTempleExplorer.com</span>, which will be embedded into the museum’s special exhibition microsite still under construction, and at a dedicated kiosk near the galleries.&nbsp;Martin’s work centers on combining HD video and interactivity to vividly portray real life online – especially with regards to the display of art. Martin has won two BAFTA nominations, three Emmy nominations, eight Webby nominations and ten Webby honorees for interactive video work, much of it for Tate (for example: <span><a href="http://www.barbarasgarden.org/">www.barbarasgarden.org</a></span>).</p> <p>The site goes live in late January 2011. The URL currently displays five videos that give a sense of how the site will look and feel. We propose to demonstrate the fully interactive version at Museums and the Web 2011.</p> <p>Apart from a few thumbnails, there is not one single still photo on the Bali site. Everything is done with video loops. The trees, water, and people move. You can look at any scene for as long as you like. At any time, you can click on hotspots which link to other video loops. Some of the loops have linear videos attached to them which don't repeat, furthering the sense of a vivid, lifelike experience.</p> <p>At any time, you can click to listen to commentary about the temple, including interviews with the priest of the temple and the head of the local village. These first-person Balinese voices bring an additional immediacy to the project.</p> <p>To make the site accessible to all users, we will provide a text-and-jpeg version of the site, as well as a linear video version.</p> <p>The text-and-jpeg page is interesting, but it doesn't feel like you're looking at the temple in real life. And while the linear video version is more emotionally compelling, it suffers from the "tyranny of the edit": the director chooses what you look at, and for how long. You can't follow your own interests at your own pace. So it's not like visiting the temple in real life.</p> <p>The fully interactive site attempts to combine the strengths of video and interactivity to make a presentation which, compared with more commonly-used online methods, is far more effective at vividly evoking the emotions and sensations of looking at culture in real life.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_i">Demonstrations I</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.balitempleexplorer.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.balitempleexplorer.com</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/dclearwaters" class="username" title="View Deborah&#039;s profile.">Deborah Clearwaters</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/martinpercy" class="username" title="View Martin&#039;s profile.">Martin Percy</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/bali_temple_explorer_an_interactive_kiosk_an#comments MW2011 Asia Asian Art Museum Bali interactive living culture video http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13197 Thu, 30 Dec 2010 17:45:40 +0000 dclearwaters 13197 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com One-to-one: supporting artist-visitor dialogue http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/one_to_one_supporting_artist_visitor_dialogu <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/one_to_one_supporting_artist_visitor_dialogue">One-to-one: supporting artist-visitor dialogue</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> kiosk </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> website </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> dialogue </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> video </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> artist </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> twitter </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Artists have been using the Internet since the early days of the Web, but no-one has done anything quite like Chinese artist Ai Weiwei who uses technology, Twitter in particular, as a way of sharing his artistic and political life with people all around the world.&nbsp;</p> <p>Alongside his Unilever Series installation at Tate Modern, which opens October 12th 2010, the Turbine Hall has also been transformed into a hub of global conversation. A special focus will be done on videos.</li> <li>How to give an access on this archive?</li> </ul> <p>Participants will be invited to share their own experiences, needs and issues about it.</p> <p><em>Who should attend?</em></p> <p>This workshop is appropriate for anyone with an interest in collecting and preserving born digital content (including websites). It does not assume technical expertise.</p> <p>Archivists, Website Producers, Project Managers, Curator</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Mini-Workshop - teaches something or explores approaches </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/mini_workshop_on_web_archiving">Mini-Workshop on Web Archiving</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://archivethe.net/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://archivethe.net/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/chlo_martin" class="username" title="View Chloé&#039;s profile.">Chloé Martin</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/web_archiving_workshop#comments MW2011 collection internet preservation video Web archive http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12405 Thu, 30 Sep 2010 14:13:08 +0000 Chloé Martin 12405 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com ArtBabble: A year's worth of lessons learned and thoughts about collaborative content platforms http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/artbabble_years_worth_lessons_learned_and_thoughts_ab <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/154">Incandela, D.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/1719">Stein R.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/artbabble_years_worth_lessons_learned_and_thoughts_ab">ArtBabble: A year's worth of lessons learned and thoughts about collaborative content platforms</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rft.title=ArtBabble%3A+A+year%26%23039%3Bs+worth+of+lessons+learned+and+thoughts+about+collaborative+content+platforms&amp;rft.date=2010&amp;rft.aulast=Incandela&amp;rft.aufirst=Daniel&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26amp%3B+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Denver%2C+Colorado%2C+USA"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/artbabble_years_worth_lessons_learned_and_thoughts_ab#comments MW MW2010 art ArtBabble collaboration metrics social media video http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12094 Wed, 14 Apr 2010 22:10:39 +0000 biblio 12094 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Vodcasting: 5 easy steps to film an interview and get it online in a day! http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/vodcasting_5_easy_steps_film_interview_and_get_it_onl <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/65">Samis, P.</a>, <a href="/biblio/author/188">Svenonius T.</a>, <a href="/biblio/author/189">Johnson T.</a>, <a href="/biblio/author/190">Dance K.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/191">Pau S.</a></span> (2007).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/vodcasting_5_easy_steps_film_interview_and_get_it_onl">Vodcasting: 5 easy steps to film an interview and get it online in a day!</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1661">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web 2007.
