The New Children’s Museum is a dynamic new model of a museum that provides inventive and engaging art experiences that are meaningful to children and families — stimulating imagination, inquisitiveness and innovative thinking by exhibiting participatory works of art by contemporary artists and providing a venue for art making and play. NCM brings families together in a rich educational environment that fosters creativity — blending elements of art museum, children’s museum, and community center. Founded in 1941, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) is the region's foremost forum devoted to the exploration and presentation of the art of our time, presenting works across all media created since 1950. With two distinct locations, one located in the coastal community of La Jolla and the other in the heart of downtown San Diego, MCASD provides an unprecedented variety of exhibition spaces and experiences for the community, showcasing an internationally recognized collection and a dynamic schedule of exhibitions and public programs.

Focusing on providing access to its permanent collection, MCASD has found that social media is a great tool to connect with a wider audience. Tour the exhibition ICONIC:MCASD (Abstraction),which emphasizes the strength of the Museum’s holdings of abstract art, and learn about the successes and challenges of connecting audiences with our online collection through social media. Take a tour of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Conservation Research, located next to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Opened in 2004, the facility houses the Institute for Conservation Research and the Zoo's Library and Archives. Attendees will see first-hand some of the work that goes on in the Institute's six labs, learn about how the Library and Archives serves the zoo's geographically diverse staff, and meet with the zoo's Social Media Planner. Lunch will be served in Center's courtyard and will provide attendees with the chance to get up close and personal with one of the Safari Park's animal ambassadors.

The Old Globe Theatre

Discover how the magic is created with a Behind the Scenes tour of The Old Globe including a backstage look at the Globe’s theatres. Learn how the spectacular costumes are built; how the Scene Shop can make simple plywood look like fine drawing room paneling or an old barn; and how they built impressive sets to look like a stone castle, the “Grinch” storybook scenes by Dr. Seuss, or a remote island surrounded by water. Learn about the simulated food, statues, puppets and elaborate, fanciful headgear created by the Properties Department. In addition, learn something informative about each of the current plays running, whether it’s a classic or, perhaps, a contemporary Tony Award-winning play or a new musical bound for Broadway. In June 2010, the J. Paul Getty Museum launched a multimedia tour at the Getty Villa, available on the iPod touch® onsite for visitors to check out.

The tour features videos and insightful commentary from curators and conservators on over 150 works of art in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa and in special exhibitions.

Over the summer of 2010, we evaluated the Getty Villa iPod touch® tour -- here are excerpts from the evaluation:

Users selected the words ‘interesting’ (74%), ‘informative’ (73%), ‘accessible’ (71%), ‘educational’ (69%) and ‘engaging’ (66%) most frequently to describe their tour experience out of a list of 22 words including an ‘other’ specified option where visitors could provide their own word or words.

Overall, users rated the tour highly. At least 3 in 4 users were very satisfied, rated the amount of content just right, will strongly recommend and thought the tour made the experience much more enjoyable.

Overwhelmingly, users prefer a multimedia format to traditional audio-only format.

Villa visitor comments about tour (from evalulation):

I knew I could get a guide of some kind. It’s hard for me to read the wall cards. As I get older it’s harder to see.

You learn, which is part of the joy. You see the beauty that you wouldn’t see otherwise. The iPod provided me with more information!

The demonstration will cover a demo of the tour, as well as how we developed, and manage content for updating the tour in-house.

cell phone and iPhone application tours of the museum (including an app to accompany an exhibit curated by the College’s high school Junior Fellows)
a digital library consortium project, social media presence, and
www.historyofvaccines.org, which features the collections of the museum and Historical Medical Library in a visually engaging, interactive website that explores the history of immunization.

Visitors will then enjoy an introduction to the fascinating anatomical and pathology collections displayed in the Mütter Museum as well as time to explore the exhibits on their own.

Abstract:

For the opening of the Museum's new Art of the Americas wing, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston embarked upon a sweeping new program to transform the traditional audio guide into a new iPod Touch-based multimedia guide. This ambitious endeavor was fraught with challenges as diverse as managing content production at a new scale and determining how to reliably charge 750 devices at a time.

In this session, MFA New Media team members will share lessons learned from our large-scale project, including points such as:

Strategy - determining the best direction for our visitors and institution
Planning and evaluation - prototype testing of content and the device
Offerings - features and tours (adult, kids, foreign language, special exhibition, and audio described guides)
Content production - moving production in house while still leveraging experts
CMS - selecting and enhancing the guide content management solution
Updating content - crafting a solution for making content updates manageable
Security - protecting the investment
Equipment - cases, headphones, lanyards, chargers and more
Operations - managing workflow, training, and rental and return
Future growth - where we'll be heading next

The MFA uses TAP as the CMS, with a modified/customized TAP app as the user interface. We use the Nous case and a homegrown charging solution.
