By that date the project will have catalogued approximately 200,000 paintings from around 3,000 collections including not only those in museums but also works in universities, hospitals, fire stations and other public buildings. The largest of these collections is the National Trust with over 12,000 oil paintings. At the other end of the scale are many collections that hold just one painting. In between lie famous collections such as Tate and the National Gallery and a massive core of unsung local authority museums.</p> <p>(ii)&nbsp; The project to build and then run the Your Paintings website including reference to the audience research that preceded the build, the engagement of stakeholders, the programmes to reach wider audiences, how we are connecting broadcast BBC arts programmes to the Your Paintings website and the measures of success that are being used to track project progress.</p> <p>(iii)The Your Paintings Tagger crowdsourcing project at <a href="http://tagger.thepcf.org.uk/">http://tagger.thepcf.org.uk/</a></p> <p>which is creating enhanced meta data for the Your Paintings website using a methodology used in the classification of galaxies by the Citizen Science Alliance (the Galaxy Zoo project). Cultural repositories are at a critical transition point. The Web is having a profound impact on how institutions fulfill their cultural missions. An increasing share of resources – human and financial – are devoted to digitization, preservation, and online access.</p> <p>Some of the questions we will address are as follows: How is technology driving changes in the traditional roles of museum interns and mentors? How can museum internship programs empower students from diverse backgrounds to become cultural interpreters and knowledge contributors? What are some strategies for funding internship partnerships between museums and universities? How can interns help museums adapt to technological change?</p> <p>In June 2010 the Cultural Technology Partnership of the New Mexico Dept. of Cultural Affairs and New Mexico Highlands University Media Arts received funding&nbsp;to establish&nbsp;the first&nbsp;AmeriCorps Cultural Technology Internship Program. Presented by Neil McGregor, Director of the British Museum, each programme investigated in depth an object from the Museum’s collection and through the year formed a narrative that told a history of our world from man’s first artefact, the handaxe to the present day (the identity of the 100th object has not been made public at the time of writing).</p> <p>This paper takes a brief look at the history of collaborations between museums and broadcasters, before going to present how the BBC and BM project team developed a digital offer (centred on <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld">www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld</a>) that both supported and extended the core programmes, building on the central idea that objects have a unique power to tell stories and make connections across the globe.</p> <p>The paper will discuss the arc of the project in the three spheres – on air, online and onsite at the British Museum and in museums across the UK – and show how the project was developed and sustained in the build-up to the first broadcast and throughout the year, on Radio 4 and other BBC radio and TV channels, the A History of the World and British Museum websites, the blog, mobile site, and social media sites. In addition to the core 100 British Museum objects, the project extended to include contributions from over 500 museums across the UK and several thousand individuals, who uploaded their object and its story to the site – both online, at schools and at events throughout the UK.</p> <p>We will also discuss some of the issues encountered during the scoping of the digital components– particularly focusing on maintaining the centrality of the broadcast offer, while opening it out to wider contribution and ownership – both that of partner museums and the public. We will then conclude by assessing the reach and impact of this unique project, and look how it can be used as a model of future public service partnerships between broadcasters and cultural organisations in a digital era.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/multi_channel">Multi-Channel</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/matthewcock" class="username" title="View Matthew&#039;s profile.">Matthew Cock</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/andrew_caspari" class="username" title="View andrew&#039;s profile.">andrew caspari</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/katherine_campbell" class="username" title="View Katherine&#039;s profile.">Katherine Campbell</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/on_air_online_and_onsite_the_british_museum_#comments MW2011 broadcast museums partnerships radio social media user generated content http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12339 Mon, 27 Sep 2010 16:48:41 +0000 matthewcock 12339 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com
