As part of this movement to enhance the visitor experience, the goal of My Gallery Interactive is to create a crowd-sourced experience using a novel multi-touch table interface that allows users to participate in the curatorial process in a fun and interactive way. This project was a unique collaboration between the Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) program at UCSD, the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in San Diego, and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Tokyo and Kyoto.</p> <p>The My Gallery Interactive is a fully functional touch table interface that harnesses the expertise of undergraduate PRIME students to complete the work and presents a new, exciting model for collaboration between museums and academic institutions interested in merging art and technology.&nbsp; The interface was based on the Open Exhibits multi-touch framework (Ideum, Corrales, NM) using ActionScript and Adobe Flash. This open source framework facilitated the construction of the interface and allowed for more creativity with the user interface.&nbsp;</p> <p>The functionality of the My Gallery Interactive interface features three interactive screens. The main screen displays 50 images hand selected from MOPA’s photography collection.&nbsp; Users can move images to the center workspace to enlarge or reduce them and to select images to create a user’s mini gallery.&nbsp; They can select up to 10 photographs to add to their own personal collection. A second screen enables the user to title their gallery in English or Japanese and subsequently save it. Finally, the third screen allows the user to view past collections that had been saved by other users. Collections can be sent to and shown on an external Tile Display Wall, allowing a larger audience to view and engage with My Gallery Interactive.</p> <p>My Gallery Interactive was developed as a prototype for a crowd-sourcing project that will premiere at the Museum of Photographic Arts in 2012.&nbsp; Visitors to MOPA’s galleries during the summer of 2012 will be able to interact with an extended version of the My Gallery Interactive and will have an opportunity to rate the photographs in the Museum’s collection on the touch table.&nbsp; A similar interaction will also be available on MOPA’s website for online users.&nbsp; Together, the data from both the touch table and website will be transformed into a visitor-curated exhibition that will be installed in the Fall of 2012.</p> <p>Participants to the Museums and the Web conference will be able to experience the My Gallery Interactive interface first hand in this demonstration.&nbsp; PRIME students, NICT and MOPA project managers will be available to answer any questions about the development, implementation, and collaboration process.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/demonstrations/mw2012_demonstrations_ii_0">MW2012 Demonstrations II</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.mopa.org/blog/14-09-11/mopa-japan-my-gallery-%E5%AF%BE%E8%A9%B1%E5%9E%8B-interactive" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.mopa.org/blog/14-09-11/mopa-japan-my-gallery-%E5%AF%BE%E8%A9%B1%E5%9E...</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/vivian_kung_haga" class="username" title="View Vivian&#039;s profile.">Vivian Kung Haga</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/joaquinortiz" class="username" title="View Joaquin&#039;s profile.">Joaquin Ortiz</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/amber_lucero" class="username" title="View Amber&#039;s profile.">Amber Lucero</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/wesley_hsu" class="username" title="View Wesley&#039;s profile.">Wesley Hsu</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/lance_castillo_0" class="username" title="View Lance&#039;s profile.">Lance Castillo</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/jason_haga" class="username" title="View Jason&#039;s profile.">Jason Haga</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/masaki_chikama" class="username" title="View Masaki&#039;s profile.">Masaki Chikama</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/tomoaki_takata" class="username" title="View Tomoaki&#039;s profile.">Tomoaki Takata</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/yoshinori_kobayashi" class="username" title="View Yoshinori&#039;s profile.">Yoshinori Kobayashi</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/shinji_shimojo" class="username" title="View Shinji&#039;s profile.">Shinji Shimojo</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/my_gallery_interactive_engaging_museum_audie#comments MW2012 gallery interactive interactive international collaboration multi-touch open exhibits touch table http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15843 Thu, 15 Dec 2011 20:01:51 +0000 Vivian Kung Haga 15843 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Kinect Hacking: Sensing Spaces http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/kinect_hacking_sensing_spaces <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> interactive </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> user experience </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> hacking </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> sensing </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> kinect </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This workshop will take a look at new trends in sensing technologies for immersive exhibits and environments. Designed for a target audience of youth ages 8-14, along with their families and teachers, the online experience consists of a rich 3D and video-integrated site and social media initiatives. A customized CMS allows Chabot to maintain site content and point-based awards. Rich reporting tools provide details about activity usage, completion and scoring performance, with filtering by age, geography and school affiliation.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To integrate the onsite and online experiences, Chabot invested in RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology within the physical exhibition. Using Climate Scout ID cards containing RFID tags, visitors track their progress and collect points as they complete activities in the exhibit. This digital interface is designed to explore online the main pieces of the collection of the <em>Museo de Antropología de Xalapa</em>, located in eastern Mexico, by bonding together ideas about visualization of information, context mapping and trails of navigation.</p> <p>The collection that belongs to this museum consists of important cultural-heritage artifacts of the main cultures that established themselves in the current state of <em>Veracruz</em>, before the Spaniards’ arrival in Mexico: the <em>Huaxteca</em> culture in the north, the culture of <em>Central Veracruz</em> in the centre of the state and the <em>Olmeca</em> in the south. Its total collection preserves and guards about 29,000 Pre-Hispanic artifacts, from which nearly 1,500 are exhibited in its halls.</p> <p>The project draws on the design of a digital interface that privileges exploration and browsing of visual connections with an open-ended focus; namely, an interface that allows a visitor to place a ‘object/concept’ at the centre of his/her interpretative layer, and thus create a hub of connections. Expressed differently, the interface is based on associations of visualizations and the tracking of diverse mappings set by the visitors themselves. Following is presented an overview of the interaction design space of this digital interface:</p> <p>When exploring the online collection, the visitor has the choice to select any category as a main hub. For example, when the visitor selects the hub <em>Dualidad</em> (Duality), the interface presents visualizations of an ‘object/concept’ that are connected to this selection, such as the artifacts of smiling faces, twins, and feminine figures. If the visitor decides to access more information about a specific artifact of an smiling face, then the interface displays some other mappings of ‘object/concept’ related to that artifact; for instance, concepts of death, the <em>Ollin</em> (movement) as well as some other archaeological pieces connected to the main hub of Duality. After that, if the visitor continues to explore the collection and decides to discover more about the <em>Ollin</em> concept, this can be selected as the main hub. In consequence, the interface will present a selection of visual results connected to this new category as well as of all the artifacts of the collection that have connections with this latter category.</p> <p>While there are several projects that have used similar concepts, within the area of cultural heritage there are few studies that investigate on the exploration of archeological information presentation. Therefore, this project aims to contribute on such exploration, by designing an interface based on connections of visualizations, and to the further creation of interpretative layers for the visitors’ exploration.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstration_v">Demonstration V</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://mlab.taik.fi/~bacuna/max_Project2008/index.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://mlab.taik.fi/~bacuna/max_Project2008/index.html</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/blanca_a" class="username" title="View Blanca&#039;s profile.">Blanca Acuña</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/designing_an_interactive_visualization_to__0#comments MW2011 Digital Exhibition digital heritage interaction design interactive Interactive Visualization interface design http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13209 Fri, 31 Dec 2010 12:57:32 +0000 Blanca_A 13209 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com The Collective: An Online Creative Community http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/the_collective_an_online_creative_community <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> social </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> interactive </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> blog </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> young adults </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> millenials </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> community </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Collective is an interactive website/online programming space that connects young adults to the Denver Art Museum’s programs. Created for the special exhibition <em>Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance</em> at the Asian Art Museum,&nbsp;San Francisco.</p> <p>When first envisioning the special exhibition, <em>Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance</em>, (on view at the Asian Art Museum February 25 through September 11, 2011) associate curator of Southeast Asian art Natasha Reichle wanted to collaborate with education staff to enhance the ritual and performing arts aspects of the exhibition. In addition to a robust series of live programs, the team set out to develop a variety of videos to bring the living culture of Bali to life.</p> <p>Martin Percy collaborated with Reichle and education director Deborah Clearwaters to create&nbsp;<span>www.BaliTempleExplorer.com</span>, which will be embedded into the museum’s special exhibition microsite still under construction, and at a dedicated kiosk near the galleries.&nbsp;Martin’s work centers on combining HD video and interactivity to vividly portray real life online – especially with regards to the display of art. Martin has won two BAFTA nominations, three Emmy nominations, eight Webby nominations and ten Webby honorees for interactive video work, much of it for Tate (for example: <span><a href="http://www.barbarasgarden.org/">www.barbarasgarden.org</a></span>).</p> <p>The site goes live in late January 2011. The URL currently displays five videos that give a sense of how the site will look and feel. We propose to demonstrate the fully interactive version at Museums and the Web 2011.</p> <p>Apart from a few thumbnails, there is not one single still photo on the Bali site. Everything is done with video loops. The trees, water, and people move. You can look at any scene for as long as you like. At any time, you can click on hotspots which link to other video loops. Some of the loops have linear videos attached to them which don't repeat, furthering the sense of a vivid, lifelike experience.</p> <p>At any time, you can click to listen to commentary about the temple, including interviews with the priest of the temple and the head of the local village. These first-person Balinese voices bring an additional immediacy to the project.</p> <p>To make the site accessible to all users, we will provide a text-and-jpeg version of the site, as well as a linear video version.</p> <p>The text-and-jpeg page is interesting, but it doesn't feel like you're looking at the temple in real life. And while the linear video version is more emotionally compelling, it suffers from the "tyranny of the edit": the director chooses what you look at, and for how long. You can't follow your own interests at your own pace. So it's not like visiting the temple in real life.</p> <p>The fully interactive site attempts to combine the strengths of video and interactivity to make a presentation which, compared with more commonly-used online methods, is far more effective at vividly evoking the emotions and sensations of looking at culture in real life.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_i">Demonstrations I</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.balitempleexplorer.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.balitempleexplorer.com</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/dclearwaters" class="username" title="View Deborah&#039;s profile.">Deborah Clearwaters</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/martinpercy" class="username" title="View Martin&#039;s profile.">Martin Percy</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/bali_temple_explorer_an_interactive_kiosk_an#comments MW2011 Asia Asian Art Museum Bali interactive living culture video http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13197 Thu, 30 Dec 2010 17:45:40 +0000 dclearwaters 13197 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Mini-Workshop on Outdoor, Museum Interactions http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/session/mini_workshop_on_outdoor_museum_interactions <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-event-programs"> <div class="field-label">Programs:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/programs/taking_the_museum_to_the_streets">Taking the Museum to the Streets</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-datetime"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date &amp; Time:&nbsp;</div> <span class="date-display-single">April 8, 2011 - <span class="date-display-start">3:30pm</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">4:30pm</span></span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-event-location"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Location:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/mw2011/locations/commonwealth_cd">Commonwealth C/D</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-event-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> interaction </div> <div class="field-item even"> multi-user </div> <div class="field-item odd"> interactive </div> <div class="field-item even"> user generated content </div> </div> </div> <div class="add-to-cart"> <p><em>Required fields are marked with a red asterisk (<span class="form-required">*</span>).</em></p><form action="/paper_keywords/interactive_0/feed" accept-charset="UTF-8" method="post" id="uc-product-add-to-cart-form-13071"> <div><input type="hidden" name="qty" id="edit-qty" value="1" /> <input type="submit" name="op" id="edit-submit-13071" value="Add to registration" class="form-submit node-add-to-cart" /> <input type="hidden" name="form_build_id" id="form-4dbbdd475804b0d65d541905b0cfd714" value="form-4dbbdd475804b0d65d541905b0cfd714" /> <input type="hidden" name="form_id" id="edit-uc-product-add-to-cart-form-13071" value="uc_product_add_to_cart_form_13071" /> </div></form> <p>A confirmation of your registration will be sent to your email address. This workshop will look at some of the practical, epistemological and technical approaches to the challenges based on specific case material.</p> <p>In April 2010 the Museum of Copenhagen, in cooperation with Gibson Group Ltd and Spild af Tid/Waste of Time, launched a giant multi-touch multimedia installation in one of the central squares in Copenhagen. In the first half year of its 14 hour a day functioning, The WALL, as it is called, has attracted more than 400,000 users, who have viewed more than 2,000,000 images, sent more than 60,000 personal postcards, and maybe most importantly, uploaded 2,500 new contributions of their own. Semi-mobile, The WALL will be moved around Copenhagen over the coming four years. It gives Copenhageners street access to a poetic cityscape of images and knowledge about their city, and offers a platform for all citizens and guests of the city to interact with and discuss the past, present and future of the city. In parallel to the multi-touch installation experienced in the streets, a website connects The WALL, its multimedia database and the museum. Both the website and The WALL support the museum's new profile of having the city as its prime object and being fully embedded in the city.</p> <p>See a 5 minute documentary on the project: <a href="http://tinyurl.com/24h65ya" title="http://tinyurl.com/24h65ya">http://tinyurl.com/24h65ya</a></p> <p>The workshop will allow participants to get inside the project and discuss the challenges and lessons of this pioneering work, while exploring hands-on the unique user interface on a cut-down version of The WALL – including a year’s worth of user contributions.</p> <p>In this way the workshop will investigate:</p> <ul> <li>practical and technical challenges concerning the development of a mobile, multi-touch, user-involving installation, outdoors in the city space</li> <li>hands-on use of the “2D/3D cityscape editor” software that creates the cultural topographies of The WALL</li> <li>the conceptual and epistemological considerations and choices underlying these topographies</li> <li>achievements and lessons from the first year of operation – how do reception, use and interaction correspond with the original intentions we had in the development phase, what are the differences and how can they be explained? Are there things we would have done differently?</li> <li>Does the Wall create a new agenda for future museum practices and for the relationship between cities, citizens and their museums?</li> </ul> <p>Participants are invited to present examples of their own experiences with multi-user and user-generated content installations, and to reflect on their experiences with operating these in a non-regulated milieu.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Mini-Workshop - teaches something or explores approaches </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/mini_workshop_on_outdoor_museum_interactions">Mini-Workshop on Outdoor, Museum Interactions</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.vaeggen.copenhagen.dk" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.vaeggen.copenhagen.dk</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/jetsankffkkdk" class="username" title="View Jette&#039;s profile.">Jette Sandahl</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/jakob_ingemann_parby" class="username" title="View Jakob&#039;s profile.">Jakob Parby</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/allangibson" class="username" title="View Allan&#039;s profile.">Allan Smith</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/jakob" class="username" title="View Jakob&#039;s profile.">Jakob Thorbek</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/lotte" class="username" title="View Lotte Kryger&#039;s profile.">Lotte Kryger Broe</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/taking_the_museum_to_the_streets#comments MW2011 cultural heritage democracy dialogue interactive multi-touch urban identity User-involvement http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12365 Wed, 29 Sep 2010 12:49:14 +0000 Jakob Ingemann Parby 12365 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Interactive Multimedia in American Museums http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/interactive_multimedia_american_museums <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/1825">Koester, S.
