Designed for a target audience of youth ages 8-14, along with their families and teachers, the online experience consists of a rich 3D and video-integrated site and social media initiatives. A customized CMS allows Chabot to maintain site content and point-based awards. Rich reporting tools provide details about activity usage, completion and scoring performance, with filtering by age, geography and school affiliation.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To integrate the onsite and online experiences, Chabot invested in RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology within the physical exhibition. Using Climate Scout ID cards containing RFID tags, visitors track their progress and collect points as they complete activities in the exhibit. The Climate Scout ID allows visitors to link points earned in the exhibition to their online account, and continue to track their progress in reducing energy consumption and finding solutions to a warming planet via the activities on the website.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The project was designed to create an extended, enhanced visitor experience. The interaction between the physical exhibition, RFID technology, interactive website, social media initiatives, &nbsp;and the action-oriented message of the project have the potential to create stronger engagement for individuals, families, and school field trip guests. Reporting tools were integrated into the design of the RFID solution and website; over time this data will help quantify the project’s impact.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_ii">Demonstrations II</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.billsclimatelab.org" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.billsclimatelab.org</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/tschwarz" class="username" title="View Tamara&#039;s profile.">Tamara Schwarz</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/bill_nyes_climate_lab#comments MW2011 activism exhibition interactive RFID youth http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13221 Sat, 01 Jan 2011 05:34:09 +0000 tschwarz 13221 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com MisterDarwin.eu: A web exhibition based on 2.0 interactivity http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/misterdarwineu_a_web_exhibition_based_on_20_ <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/misterdarwineu_a_web_exhibition_based_on_20_in">MisterDarwin.eu: A Web Exhibition Based On 2.0 Interactivity </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Web 2.0 </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> exhibit interactive </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> exhibition </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> science museum </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> evolution </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Darwin </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We have been&nbsp;trying to bring the science center's experience to the Web, at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.casaciencias.org/mc2/" target="_blank">Science Museums of </a><a href="http://www.casaciencias.org/mc2/" target="_blank">Coruña</a>&nbsp;(Spain). After some years of trying many little things, we have no magic formula and we only know something for sure:&nbsp;the whole institution website is a tough place to start&nbsp;(and tougher in our case, considering that we are three different museums under the same brand: mc2).</p> <p>So, instead of trying to bring the whole museum to the web,&nbsp;we thought of bringing just an exhibition. Instead of redesigning our whole website, we started creating a new microsite to complement the exhibition:&nbsp;<a href="http://misterdarwin.eu/" target="_blank">"To the astonishment of Mr. Darwin"</a>.</p> <p>Our approach to an exhibition website tries to go beyond the concept of "electronic brochure". Rather than translating the exhibition's brochure to a web page we tried to&nbsp;develop a multimedia-content viewer, with quick and simple navigation.&nbsp;</p> <p>More than creating and intuitive multimedia experience,&nbsp;our main goal was taking to the Web the idea of an exhibit, which is the core of our museums' experience: an interactive element to explore, play, wake up curiosity, make questions and start to look for the answers.</p> <p>So we decided to go and hunt visitors where they are wandering around in the Internet: in places like YouTube, Facebook or Twitter. The point was&nbsp;using social networks and Web 2.0 services to create interactive online experiences, that connect people with ideas.</p> <p>These 2.0 exhibits are the core of the microsite we would like to demonstrate at this conference. The web of the exhibition<a href="http://misterdarwin.eu/" target="_blank">"To the astonishment of Mr. Darwin"</a>&nbsp;has a launch date set on February 12th, 2011, to celebrate Darwin's 202 birthday. MisterDarwin.eu is a multilingual web (English, Spanish and Galician),&nbsp;born to complement the physical exhibition but with its own value, to&nbsp;curiosity u Darwin and evolution. We hope to get people want to visit the exhibition but we also try to reach bigger audiences.</p> <p>We&nbsp;plan to create a platform&nbsp;based on this microsite, to easily develop websites for our other flagship exhibitions. We are building the tools to get the museum's staff (our content developers) doing most of that work: creating and updating the online exhibits. We also want&nbsp;this platform to be&nbsp;open to other institutions' participation, in a near future. But, first of all, we would like to share our work, doubts, accomplishments, frustrations, needs... with other colleagues and learn of other different approaches of bringing the museum to the Web.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_iii">Demonstrations III</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://misterdarwin.eu/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://misterdarwin.eu/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/fuco" class="username" title="View Francisco&#039;s profile.">Francisco Doménech</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/misterdarwineu_a_web_exhibition_based_on_20_#comments MW2011 Darwin evolution exhibit interactive exhibition science museum Web 2.0 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13215 Fri, 31 Dec 2010 20:44:56 +0000 fuco 13215 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com My Ideal City http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/my_ideal_city_0 <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> urban planning </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> virtual worlds </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> exhibition </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> curatorial practices </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> science museums </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The MIC (My Ideal City) project aims to encourage a European dimension in the communication of science and technology through museums events targeting the public. More specifically, it supports the networking around the development of a coordinated exhibition in different museums that is using a “virtual worlds” dimension in order to connect urban planning choices and the awareness of citizens about them, as well as an International Conference that will bring together academics and science centres experts to discuss the relationships among urban planning, cyberspace and science events.</p> <p>The virtual exhibition, focus of the demonstration, provides visitors of each science centre and on the Web with a “virtual worlds” environment that reproduces in alternative and different ways their own city. The visitors have then the opportunity to visit also the different virtual ideal cities of the other partner countries involved in the project. The new cities, the “ideal” ones, enables citizens to re-think their urban environments and the choices done in order to make them as they appear in the virtual environment. The project not only provides citizens with an exhibition able to raise socio-cultural awareness in relation to the urban choices, but also involves them in the planning of the “ideal cities”, giving another contribution to the spread of an open and transparent process of communicating among science (sustainable urban planning), technology (the “virtual” environment), institutions (science centres), and people.<br />The demonstration focus on detailing how the final result, the virtual exhibition, reflects the project aims, methods, and topics, with particular attention toward the role of different curatorial practices in giving shape to the different ideal cities.</p> <p>We kindly ask the committee to evaluate the exhibition as it can be downloaded from the website, because it is going to be the focus of the presentation</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration -
