We have since run four AR projects for young people, each of which focused on a different aspect of the technology. Our first project focused on revealing content on markers; the second on creating alternative views on the collection; the third on location-based AR for navigation; and the fourth on exhibiting virtual art in the galleries. These projects have both challenged and surprised us. Technical problems like the instability of compasses for positioning and poor 3G reception have challenged us to find workable solutions. Working with different age groups in formal and informal education settings led to discoveries about AR’s ability to delight and engage young learners and to teach fine motor skills. Shoestring budgets forced us to be creative and resourceful in our approach to mobile app development. Here, we share our experiences and lessons learned in integrating AR into museum and gallery learning programs.</p> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-paper-program-ref"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Program Item Reference:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/mw2012/programs/beyond_cool_making_mobile_augmented_reality_">Beyond Cool: Making Mobile Augmented Reality Work for Museum Education</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/beyond_cool_making_mobile_augmented_reality_wo" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/beyond_cool_making_mobile_augmented_reality_wo#comments MW2012 ar augmented reality children digital education learning mobile tablet http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/17018 Sun, 14 Oct 2012 02:43:30 +0000 smannion 17018 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Can Moderate-priced Technology Extend the Museum Experience Successfully? http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/can_moderate_priced_technology_extend_the_muse <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-paper-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <h3 class="Author">Hosan Kim, Ph.D., Dongsoong Art Center, with Ockrang Kim, Hyangbin Kim, and Jaejeong Kim, Kokdu Museum, Rep. of Korea</h3> <h2 class="AbstractTitle">Abstract</h2> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-paper-program-ref"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Program Item Reference:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/mw2012/programs/can_moderate_priced_technology_extend_the_mu">Can moderate-priced technology extend the museum experience successfully?</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/can_moderate_priced_technology_extend_the_muse" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/can_moderate_priced_technology_extend_the_muse#comments MW2012 affordable technology augmented reality convergence technology moderate priced technology museum experience http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/16952 Sun, 08 Apr 2012 19:13:43 +0000 hosankim 16952 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Augmented Reality—What Reality Can We Learn From It? http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/augmented_reality_what_reality_can_we_learn_fr <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-paper-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <h3 class="Author">Cherry Thian, Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore</h3> <p class="url">www.acm.org.sg</p> <p class="AbstractTitle">Abstract</p> <p class="AbstractText">In June 2011, the Asian Civilisations Museum launched an integrated iPhone app—the world’s first museum app to combine augmented reality (AR), location-based gaming, and interactive features—in its special exhibition <em>Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor and His Legacy</em>. Juanio has an open API for developers which makes the creation of new apps (or “channels”) a quick and simple process for any competent programmer. By April 2012, Junaio will have released a WYSIWIG Content Creator to make this process even easier. The goal of this mini-workshop is to demonstrate how easily an Augmented Reality application can be built and to build a working app by the end of the hour that can be viewed throughout the conference.</p> <p>Jointly-led between museum staff who have implemented Junaio channels and developers from Metaio, which produces Junaio, the session is intended for technical staff, programmers or project managers who want to quickly get up to speed with AR. It will be of particular benefit for small museums which have limited resources to devote to cutting edge technologies like AR, but want to understand how to put together a compelling, working app on a shoestring budget.</p> <p>The AR app produced in the workshop can demonstrate some of the newest and most interesting features of Junaio including 2D image recognition and 3D tracking. It will include pre-prepared rich media content and content that participants download from their institution’s own website. It will be accessible through the Junaio browser, which can be downloaded free from the Apple AppMarket and Andriod Store. It will run on any smartphone or tablet with Juanio installed. If it is a location-based channel, virtual content can be viewed by anyone (not just workshop participants) in and around the MW conference venue for the duration of the event.</p> <p>To be clear, the workshop is not intended to promote use of Juanio to the exclusion of other tools, but to show the steps in creating any successful AR application and how museum content should be designed and produced for mobile AR. Wherever possible alternative tools and techniques will be mentioned and parallels drawn between what is being shown in Junaio and how to accomplish the same task on other platforms. The format of the mini-workshop is based on a successful model developed at The British Museum in which children age 9-15 produced Junaio AR channels in less than a day.<span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Workshop - full or half day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/workshops/quick_and_dirty_ar_for_mobile_devices">Quick and dirty AR for mobile devices</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/smannion" class="username" title="View Shelley&#039;s profile.">Shelley Mannion</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/quick_and_dirty_ar_for_mobile_devices_a_work#comments MW2012 android application ar augmented reality device iphone mobile http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15268 Sat, 01 Oct 2011 07:36:28 +0000 smannion 15268 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Grounding Digital Information Trends http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/grounding_digital_information_trends <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> mobiles </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> social media </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> internet applications - statistics </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> usage data </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> technology impact </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> museum impact </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> research </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> augmented reality </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Pew Internet and American Life </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Pew Research Center’s Internet &amp; Applications developed with two platforms, Layar and Junaio, allow mobile users with AR-capable smart phones (equipped with a camera and GPS) to explore their surroundings through live camera views of these devices and to interact with overlaid multilayered, geo-referenced information. Interactive content “layers” let visitors with compatible devices, including iPhone and Android smartphones, see annotated information about physical exhibits and locations in outdoor spaces, leave “markers,”of their visit experience in places where others can see them, and explore temporal data about objects and locations. While it’s possible to get started right away developing content and user-experiences with mobile AR, advances in mobile image processing, tagging technologies, and wearable computing – combined with the convergence of distributed networks and location-aware applications – will help define more intimate modes of human-computer interaction that museum exhibit and experience developers can further explore.</p> <p>This paper discusses content creation for mobile AR experience design using these two platforms, strategies for incorporating preparation of mobile AR-ready information into a digital content creation workflow, and measuring impact via mobile analytics. It covers key processes including&nbsp; geotagging&nbsp; different types of assets (images, videos, audio, and 3-D objects) and methods of interfacing the AR authoring platforms with content in external systems including event calendars, media portal/content management systems, and social-sharing sites such as YouTube, and Flickr.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/augmented_reality">Augmented Reality</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/rrothfarb" class="username" title="View Rob&#039;s profile.">Rob Rothfarb</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/mixing_realities_to_connect_people_places_an#comments MW2011 3D authoring augmented reality geotagging mixed reality mobile devices social applications http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12477 Fri, 01 Oct 2010 01:40:09 +0000 rrothfarb 12477 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Augmented Storytelling: How to Create Interesting AR Tours in the Urban Realm http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/augmented_storytelling_how_to_create_interes <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> augmented reality </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> mobile tours </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Storytelling in urban Realm </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> layar </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> smartphone </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> ARtours </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The newest AR technology on your smartphone (for example: Layar) makes it possible to take your museum collection out of the digital database and reposition it on all possible locations in the urban realm. This project investigates and produces augmented reality tours around the collection of the Stedelijk and modern art in general. The project aims at both indoor and outdoor applications:</p> <ul> <li>Indoor as a replacement or addition to the classic audio tour.</li> <li>Outdoor as a new experience and new interactions with modern art</li> </ul> <p>In both instances not only the current collection is used but also new developed art forms and new narratives will be incorporated in the project.</p> <p>The paper will describe the project in all its aspects. Ranging from AR technologies and AR mobile browsers to storytelling and enhancing the user experience inside and outside the museum. The two year project is halfway. Several pilots and its conclusions from this first period will be described. One of the pilots is ‘Ik op het museumplein’ (myself on the museum square). Virtual three dimensional art is presented on specific locations and accessible through the augmented reality browser Layar. Outside on the museum square in Amsterdam people with an Iphone or Adroid smart phone with Layar can walk around and engage with virtual art (virtual 3D objects and sound). Another pilot is a virtual art library. Again with the use of Layar users can borrow art objects from the museum and place these objects in the space around them. This pilot was conducted during the Lowlands music festival in the summer. A third pilot is the design tour. In an walk through the city of Amsterdam users can experience (interior, product, graphic) design in it’s context. Users can walk from one virtual object to another and learn more about the object and the place it is linked to.</p> <p>The project focuses on a wide range of aspects such as technical, user experience, creation and management of information, indoor and outdoor, young and older audiences.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/augmented_reality">Augmented Reality</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/mschavemaker" class="username" title="View margriet&#039;s profile.">margriet schavemaker</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/paul_stork" class="username" title="View Paul&#039;s profile.">Paul Stork</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/heinwils" class="username" title="View Hein&#039;s profile.">Hein Wils</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/ebelienpondaag" class="username" title="View Ebelien&#039;s profile.">Ebelien Pondaag</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/augmented_reality_and_the_museum_experience#comments MW2011 augmented reality contemporary art Future of Curating mobile technology Storytelling in urban Realm user experience http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12373 Wed, 29 Sep 2010 20:19:21 +0000 mschavemaker 12373 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Implementing Mobile Augmented Reality Applications for Cultural Institutions http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/implementing_mobile_augmented_reality_applic <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/implementing_mobile_augmented_reality_applicat">Implementing Mobile Augmented Reality Applications for Cultural Institutions</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> augmented reality </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> mobile technology </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> public engagement </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> historic photographs </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> location-based apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Mobile applications have increasingly become a regular part of the outreach and engagement strategies of many cultural institutions. As smart phone use grows, some organizations have sought to go beyond typical mobile applications and integrate location-based and augmented reality technology as a way to further access to collections, create new methods for understanding and interpreting the items, and increase communication between the organizations and the communities they serve.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>In Spring 2010, the City of Philadelphia Department of Records received an NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up grant to investigate mobile augmented reality technology for use in displaying overlays of historic photographs on the current urban landscape. Users simply point the cameras on their smart phones at a location of interest and the historic photographs and selected data related to the site are automatically accessed right through the camera display. The project utilized the resources of <em>Philly</em>History.org, a collaborative online database of historic photographs and maps from five Philadelphia area institutions, and the <em>Philly</em>History.org smart phone web application, a location-based web app that provides access to the collections via iPhone and Android smart phones.</p> <p>As a growing number of museums and humanities institutions from Philadelphia to London to Sydney are turning their attention to new technologies like augmented reality to revitalize interest in their collections, this paper will examine the state of mobile augmented reality technology and its current and possible applications for use within cultural institutions. Through an exploration and evaluation of the successes and challenges of the Department of Records’ augmented reality project, we will investigate how this technology can be applied to other archives and museums and whether such efforts have proven valuable as an engagement and outreach tool.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/mobile_parade">Mobile Parade</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.phillyhistory.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.phillyhistory.org/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/dboyer" class="username" title="View Deborah&#039;s profile.">Deborah Boyer</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/joshmarcus" class="username" title="View Josh&#039;s profile.">Josh Marcus</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/implementing_mobile_augmented_reality_applic#comments MW2011 augmented reality historic photographs location-based apps mobile technology public engagement http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12367 Wed, 29 Sep 2010 14:27:43 +0000 DBoyer 12367 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Conveying Culture Heritage and Legacy with Innovative AR-based Solutions http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/conveying_culture_heritage_and_legacy_innovative_arba <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/663">Bogen, M.</a>, &amp;
