Teens were invited to submit artworks online and have their friends and family vote for them. The twelve works with the most votes were then exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada and a jury selected the top three winners.&nbsp;&nbsp;Inspired by the reach of current web and new media technologies, this program represented several ‘firsts’ for the Gallery, including using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) as a primary means of dissemination and communication. &nbsp; As a national institution, the Gallery is dedicated to engaging a diverse range of audiences, many of whom may never visit their national art collection because of where they live.</span></p> <p><span>Initially conceived as a website targeted to schools, designed to make the collection known to teens and based on a theme determined by the Gallery, the project evolved to be open to all teens, about themes of their choosing, and leveraged their comfort using social media. In the spirit of innovation, risk-taking, and being visitor-centred, the Gallery expanded on its standard approaches to program delivery and experimented with social media in order to engage meaningfully with a national teen audience. From across the country, 126 youth submitted artwork online.&nbsp; These submissions garnered 22,000 votes on Facebook, and the contest website was visited by over 55,000 people. &nbsp;<span>By April 2012 the second iteration of the contest will be well underway.&nbsp;</span></span></p> <p><span>Participants will learn how social media can offer access to diverse audiences; they will become aware of potential benefits and risks in using social media as a method of community building; they will become more open to experimenting and taking risks with social media.&nbsp; Participants will come away with practical tips, tricks, and lessons learned about using social media in program delivery.</span></p> <p><span>The demonstration will be of interest to new or mid-career museum professionals in interpretation and education, marketing and public relations, and web and new media who seek to engage with diverse publics, possibly over a large geographic area. It will also be of particular interest to those who are developing strategies for using social media to engage meaningfully with new audiences, and who – with limited human and financial resources— seek effective ways of leveraging existing networks of communities.</span></p> <p><span>Insights from staff and participants will be shared. Lessons learned and questions raised will be linked to other examples of current best practice to reveal some of the new ways of thinking— about audiences, staff roles, and the value of social media—that can help move us towards being more responsive and inclusive.&nbsp;</span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/demonstrations/mw2012_demonstrations_iii">MW2012 Demonstrations III</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://makeart.gallery.ca/index.php/gallery/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://makeart.gallery.ca/index.php/gallery/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/gary_goodacre" class="username" title="View Gary&#039;s profile.">Gary Goodacre</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/so_you_want_to_be_an_artist_how_the_national#comments MW2012 art artgallery contest outreach socialmedia teen http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15883 Mon, 19 Dec 2011 19:58:59 +0000 Gary G 15883 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com CAM St. Louis App http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/cam_st_louis_app <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> cam </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> app </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> st. louis </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> contemporary </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> art </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> museum </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> toky </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> branding </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> CMS </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> iphone </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> camstl </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Do you want to engage with the most innovative and relevant art being made today?&nbsp; <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cam-st.-louis/id477147137?ls=1&amp;mt=8" target="_blank">There’s an App for that.</a>&nbsp;As a non-collecting institution, the&nbsp;<a href="http://camstl.org">Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) St. Louis</a>&nbsp;focuses its efforts on featuring local, national and international, well-known and newly established artists from diverse backgrounds, working in all types of media. With an intense schedule of ever-changing exhibitions in the Main Galleries and Front Room mixed with diverse public programs, ongoing educational programs, and hip social events, an App is the logical tool for today’s museum visitor. </p> <p>The CAM App is the first of its kind and functions on a local, regional, and national level. Utilizing the GPS of the iPhone, the CAM App provides users with a unique experience each time they launch the App. If launched within the museum, the interface is designed to act as an accessible tool that will help visitors navigate the aesthetic and conceptual landscape of contemporary art. With this App, users will be able to embark on a self-guided digital tour of CAM’s exhibitions currently on view. With each visit, the user will be able to move around the space, watch a video tour with architect Brad Cloepfil, listen to the Director speak about the history of the museum, and explore the mission and nature of CAM as a non-collecting institution with Chief Curator Dominic Molon. Continuing the self-guided tour, users can also listen as CAM curators introduce the work on view. As visitors explore the artworks, they will actually be able to see and hear the artist(s) talk about specific pieces featured in the current exhibition. </p> <p>Users launching the CAM App outside of the museum will be informed as to about how many miles they have to go before reaching the museum doors. Within the same screen an option exists that links users to an online map and directions to CAM from their current location. Those within a regional (50 mile) radius will also see an entire calendar including scrolling featured events and programs hosted by the museum year round. If a user is over 100 miles away, the App functions as an engaging well-designed mobile interface for online museum visitors that represents and enhances the museum’s brand nationally and internationally. Users are introduced to the CAM mission and programming via several avenues including: access to a shared blog with the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the ability to connect with CAM’s social media platforms, and access to the <a href="http://camstl.org/channel">CAM Channel </a>which contains a wealth of educational and interpretative content focusing on the current exhibition. Watch artist interviews, listen to discussions with curators and educators, or view performances and public programs that occur in the museum’s Performance Space. </p> <p>The CAM App pulls its content from the CAM website (<a href="http://camstl.org">camstl.org</a>) which is controlled through Eero, a content management system (CMS) designed by <a href="http://www.toky.com">TOKY Branding + Design</a>.&nbsp;Features such as calendars, current exhibitions, general info, and hours are all pulled and updated automatically when updates occur to the main website via Eero. Features such as digital tours are organized and updated independently from an additional tool located within the same Eero CMS as the CAM website. The demonstration will include the CAM App and Eero.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cam-st.-louis/id477147137?ls=1&amp;mt=8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cam-st.-louis/id477147137?ls=1&amp;mt=8</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/aelmestad" class="username" title="View Alex&#039;s profile.">Alex Elmestad</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/cam_st_louis_app#comments MW2012 app art branding cam camstl CMS contemporary iphone museum st. louis toky http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15730 Wed, 16 Nov 2011 22:58:50 +0000 aelmestad 15730 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Sicilian Cultural Heritage and Museums global website http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/sicilian_cultural_heritage_and_museums_globa <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> art </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> culture </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> tourism </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> museums </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> archaeology </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Sicily </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The first website of all Sicilian museums, archaeological parks and sites, art galleries. Children can tag works of art in the Whitney’s collection, create their own collections, and make a profile page where they can upload and share their own artwork and see the polls and quizzes that they have participated in. On the landing page, works by featured Whitney artists are literally paired with artwork uploaded by Whitney kids and works from the Whitney’s Collection sit side by side with kids’ collections. A special feature is a type of “graffiti wall”—a pattern maker based on a set of algorithms that kids can use to change the page design throughout the “For Kids” area.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_i">Demonstrations I</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://whitney.org/ForKids" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://whitney.org/ForKids</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/dinahelal" class="username" title="View dina&#039;s profile.">dina helal</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/for_kids#comments MW2011 art artists kids social networking user-generated content Web 2.0 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13123 Fri, 10 Dec 2010 20:01:39 +0000 dina.helal 13123 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Tour 2: New Media in Arts and Social Science Museums http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/tour/tour_2_new_media_in_arts_and_social_science_muse <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Tour </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-event-programs"> <div class="field-label">Programs:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/programs/tour_of_the_national_museum_of_america_jewis">Tour of the National Museum of America Jewish History </a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/mw2011/programs/tour_of_the_philadelphia_museum_of_art">Tour of the Philadelphia Museum of Art</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/programs/online_activities_at_the_university_of_penns">Online activities at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthroplogy</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/mw2011/programs/ica_tour">ICA Tour </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-event-complexity"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Tech Level:&nbsp;</div> all </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-date field-field-event-datetime"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Date &amp; Over the course of two years these sometimes unconnected activities were identified, shaped and successfully channelled into a unified online representation of art and artists.</p> <p>The quirky trajectory of multiple projects will be charted as resources are diverted, goals mature and priorities change. As well as the most successful endeavours, we will encounter failed initiatives, inconsistent progress, abandoned contexts and reconfigured methodologies, all set against an increasingly pressurised budgetary landscape and an unpredictable change of government.</p> <p>The finished site will act as a guide for these narratives, demonstrating the outcomes of completed efforts and acting as a live metric for the projects’ goals and priorities. Future components will be discussed in the relevant contexts, and longer term plans revealed.</p> <p>Case studies to be referred to include:</p> <ul> <li>ArtMap</li> <li>Taxonomic structures</li> <li>Online Scholarly Cataloguing Initiative</li> <li>User commenting</li> <li>Personal collections</li> <li>Archive integration</li> <li>Tate Channel</li> <li>Article syndication</li> <li>Displays information</li> <li>Curatorial style guide</li> <li>Image sizes</li> <li>User testing</li> <li>Audience research</li> <li>Social media integration</li> </ul> <p>Through discussion of these projects we will discover the scale and complexity of the finished product, the challenges of integrating many years worth of content created for other contexts, and the ongoing implications for a public institution that integrated digital workflows over a decade ago.</p> <p>A open assessment will be given of the budgetary and personnel requirements, along with the institutional impact of Tate’s Online Strategy 2010-12.</p> <p>The site will launch in February 2011.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/collections_online">Collections Online</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.tate.org.uk/collection/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.tate.org.uk/collection/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/jmkd" class="username" title="View James&#039;s profile.">James Davis</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/john_stack" class="username" title="View John&#039;s profile.">John Stack</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/art_artists#comments MW2011 art collection collections online database Interface research http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12408 Thu, 30 Sep 2010 15:25:35 +0000 jmkd 12408 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com ArtBabble: A year's worth of lessons learned and thoughts about collaborative content platforms http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/artbabble_years_worth_lessons_learned_and_thoughts_ab <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/154">Incandela, D.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/1719">Stein R.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/artbabble_years_worth_lessons_learned_and_thoughts_ab">ArtBabble: A year's worth of lessons learned and thoughts about collaborative content platforms</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rft.title=ArtBabble%3A+A+year%26%23039%3Bs+worth+of+lessons+learned+and+thoughts+about+collaborative+content+platforms&amp;rft.date=2010&amp;rft.aulast=Incandela&amp;rft.aufirst=Daniel&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26amp%3B+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Denver%2C+Colorado%2C+USA"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/artbabble_years_worth_lessons_learned_and_thoughts_ab#comments MW MW2010 art ArtBabble collaboration metrics social media video http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12094 Wed, 14 Apr 2010 22:10:39 +0000 biblio 12094 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com
