Drawing upon the memories, photographs, video, audio and 3D resources of national, regional and local archives, as well as user-generated content from groups and individuals, the website is creating a resource that places heritage media in its temporal and spatial context, and encourages &nbsp;all users not just to view but to contribute and re-use this media in innovative ways.</p> <p>In the proposed paper, staff from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, the National Museum Wales, the National Library of Wales, and the People’s Collection Wales’ Programme Manager will explain the development of this open-source system which integrates material from organisations with very different business models and data structures, and blends it through its API into a set of geo-aware digital cultural heritage<strong> </strong>resources that make sense to the end-user.</p> <p>The speakers will explain the federated management model under which the programme operates, a model that draws upon the strengths of all partners to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts.&nbsp; Speakers will make clear the moderation system that has been implemented to ensure that all material uploaded to the site is legal and can be re-used by others for educational and non-commercial purposes.</p> <p>The People’s Collection Wales has innovation at its core – the site already operates on multiple platforms, with novel tools and apps developed to assist users to create new, and re-use existing resources; the development and application of these will be explored.</p> <ul> <li>The StoryBuilder tool allows users to bring together image, audio and video items from the site and repackage them, through an intuitive online movie-maker style tool, into brand new video sequences with their own metadata and spatio-temporal context.</li> <li>Using the TrailBuilder tool, users can create geographical trails with related media located along a route.&nbsp; Each trail becomes an item in the People’s Collection, to be viewed online, printed or delivered to smartphones via the free Trails Cymru app.&nbsp; </li> <li>The Trails Cymru app itself not only enables the user to access and view trails from the People’s Collection Wales system, it is also a tool for creating trails in the field.&nbsp; Using the app it is possible to record a route, capture geo-located audio, video and images along this route and upload the finished trail to the People’s Collection Wales website direct from the smartphone.</li> </ul> <p>The People’s Collection Labs provides a showcase area for the most innovative developments in digital heritage presentation in Wales, and acts as a portal for developers to communicate their ideas on webGIS, augmented-reality, laser scanning, visualisation, and all that’s new in online presentation of heritage media.&nbsp; The latest developments arising from the People’s Collection Wales’ ongoing innovation programme will be explained.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/user_generated_community">User-Generated Community</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.peoplescollectionwales.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.peoplescollectionwales.com</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/tom_pert" class="username" title="View Tom&#039;s profile.">Tom Pert</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/dafjames" class="username" title="View Dafydd&#039;s profile.">Dafydd James</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/casgliad_y_werin_cymru_people_s_collection_w#comments MW2011 3D API apps geo-spatial open-source user-generated http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12403 Thu, 30 Sep 2010 14:10:56 +0000 Tom Pert 12403 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Cultural Data Sculpting: Omni-spatial interactive visualization for large scale heterogeneous datasets http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/cultural_data_sculpting_omni_spatial_interac <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/cultural_data_sculpting_omni_spatial_visualiza">Cultural Data Sculpting: Omni-spatial Visualization for Large Scale Heterogeneous Datasets</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> 3D </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> linguistics </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> heterogenous datasets </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> heterogenous datasets </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> 360-degrees </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> archaeology </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This paper presents a three research projects currently underway to develop new omni-spatial visualization strategies for the collaborative interrogation of large-scale heterogeneous cultural datasets using the worlds’ first 360-degree stereoscopic visualization environment (Advanced Visualization and Interaction Environment - AVIE). The AVIE system enables visualization modalities through full body immersion, stereoscopy, spatialized sound and camera-based tracking. The research integrates ground-breaking work by a renowned group of international investigators in virtual environment design, immersive interactivity, data visualization, museology, cultural analytics and computational linguistics. &nbsp; The work is being implemented at the newly established world-leading research facility, City University’s <a title="see the lab" href="http://www.cityu.edu.hk/scm/alive">Applied Laboratory for Interactive Visualization and Embodiment – ALIVE</a>).</p> <p>For researchers currently, interactive, immersive and collaborative techniques to explore large-scale datasets lack adequate experimental development essential to the construction of knowledge in analytic discourse (Pike et al<em>.</em> 2009). Recent visualization research remains constrained to 2D small-screen based analysis and advances interactive techniques of “clicking”, “dragging” and “rotating” (Lee et al. 2009, Speer et al. 2010:9) Furthermore, the number of pixels available to the user remains a critical limiting factor in human cognition of data visualizations (Kasik et al., 2009). The increasing trend towards research requiring ‘unlimited’ screen resolution has resulted in the recent growth of gigapixel displays (e.g. Powerwall) and next generation CAVE systems (e.g. StarCave, DeFanti et al<em>. </em>2009).</p> <p>The opportunities offered by interactive and 3D technologies for enhanced cognitive exploration and interrogation of high dimensional data still need to be realized within the domain of visual analytics and digital humanities (Kenderdine, 2010). The three projects described take on these core challenges of visual analytics inside AVIE to provide powerful modalities for an omni-directional exploration of multiple textual datasets, archaeological laser scan data and museum collections responding to the need for <em>embodied interaction</em>; <em>knowledge-based interfaces</em>, <em>collaboration,</em> <em>cognition and perception and, narrative coherence</em> (as identified in Pike et al. 2009).</p> <p>Within the museum, the rapid growth in participant culture has seen creative production overtake data access as the primary motive for interaction with databases and search engines. The meaning of diverse bodies of data is increasingly expressed through the user's creative exploration and re-application of data, rather than through the simple access to information. Through AVIE, museum users investigate the quality of narrative coherence brought to interactive navigation and re-organization of information.</p> <p>Databases and projects included in this paper: (1) Western Han Tomb archaeological data; (2) Museum Victoria multimedia rich records (30,000); (3) multilingual datasets including the Tripitaka Koreana in Classical Chinese (the world’s largest single corpus composed of 52 million glyphs on 83,000 printing blocks, carved in Korea in the 13th century); New Testament in Greek and English and Chinese; Bible in Hebrew and; Qur'an in Arabic.</p> <p>Even though this work takes place largely “off the web” it seeks to provide new visualization paradigms that scale, cross-platform. In addition, partners in Australia, Hong Kong, USA and Germany, with AVIE style systems can be connected together for collaborative distributed access.</p> <p><span class="inline inline-left"><a href="/image/tvionarium"><img class="image image-blog " src="http://conference.archimuse.com/files/images/tviz_web_alive.blog.jpg" alt="T'Visionarium: T'Visionarium © UNSW iCinema Research Centre" title="T'Visionarium: T'Visionarium © UNSW iCinema Research Centre" border="0" height="157" width="250" /></a></span></p> <p><span class="inline-left inline"><span class="caption" style="width: 248px;"><strong>T'Visionarium:&nbsp;</strong> © UNSW iCinema Research Centre</span></span></p> <p>Collaborators: Museum Victoria, City University of Hong Kong, ALiVE, UNSW, UC San Diego, UC Merced UC Berkeley, Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, ZKM, Jiaotong University, Tufts University</p> <p><span class="inline inline-left">&nbsp;</span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/info_seeking">Info-Seeking</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.cityu.edu.hk/scm/alive/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.cityu.edu.hk/scm/alive/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/sarah_kenderdine" class="username" title="View Sarah&#039;s profile.">Sarah Kenderdine</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/timothy_hart" class="username" title="View Timothy&#039;s profile.">Timothy Hart</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/cultural_data_sculpting_omni_spatial_interac#comments MW2011 360-degrees 3D archaeology heterogenous datasets heterogenous datasets linguistics http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12336 Mon, 27 Sep 2010 09:31:13 +0000 sarah kenderdine 12336 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Computer-Assisted Drafting and Design Programs for Architectural History and Archaeology http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/computer_assisted_drafting_and_design_programs_for_ar <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/958">Eiteljorg, H.</a></span> (1991).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/computer_assisted_drafting_and_design_programs_for_ar">Computer-Assisted Drafting and Design Programs for Architectural History and Archaeology</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1661">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Hypermedia &amp; Interactivity in Museums, Proceedings of an International Conference. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fconference.archimuse.com&amp;rft.title=Computer-Assisted+Drafting+and+Design+Programs+for+Architectural+History+and+Archaeology&amp;rft.series=ICHIM%2C+CAD&amp;rft.date=1991&amp;rft.aulast=Eiteljorg&amp;rft.aufirst=Harrison&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Pittsburgh%2C+PA&amp;rft_id=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archimuse.com%2Fpublishing%2Fhypermedia%2Fhypermedia.Ch13.pdf"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/computer_assisted_drafting_and_design_programs_for_ar#comments ICHIM91 ICHIM 3D CADD ICHIM91 museum multimedia rendering virtual reality walk-through http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/8763 Wed, 02 May 2007 01:07:08 +0000 jtrant 8763 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com
