Are the various informational resources we generate and keep in our institutions aligned to achieve what we wish to deliver to our visitors online and in person? Asking this question in reverse, are our outreach and engagement efforts remembered in the records we keep? Under ideal circumstances, the alignment we seek in managing our knowledge and delivering content to our public will mirror the physical-world needs of the diverse and expert individuals working in museums today. This workshop will explore the expanding spheres of staff involved in digital programming, particularly around museum collections, and how understanding the overlapping needs of inter-related departments will benefit aspirations for digital programming while also serving the many other over-arching goals and activities of the museum.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art invited the Bay Area experience design company, Hot Studio, to explore these challenges and to develop a refreshed conceptual framework for museum information and knowledge; a framework that fosters collaboration amongst inter-related departments and which captures knowledge from multiple voices, perspectives and contexts. This collaboration forms the basis for the workshop. The session will begin with an overview of the challenges in museums today around information and knowledge management related to artists and artworks. It is designed to test the underlying assumptions of this conceptual framework by engaging participants in an exercise that takes an artwork-centered case-study as its lead. Through this exercise, participants will explore their individual roles within their own organizational structure and the shared and collaborative potential within the larger enterprise of a museum’s service to the public. They will also take away a tool they can utilize to explore the unique challenges within their own organizations. This tool will incorporate the framework and best practices for using it with their teams.
