Why

The site offers a comprehensive and simple-to-complex layered access to the Eastern Art Collection of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, UK, including related resources, with a particular emphasis on contexts. Access to the collection has been designed and tested with multiple audiences: it ranges from offering simple highlights, a fully bespoke timeline, through to themes, exhibitions, literature and gallery floor plans - aimed at putting the objects in multiple narrative contexts. Each object (example here) becomes the centre of many interlaced stories, which make it the end of each journey as well as the start of many more. Each object also includes multiple views (where appropriate) and zoom-able images, enabling a rich visual experience. At the other end of the spectrum, advanced search facilities offer scholars the opportunity to be very detailed about their quest for knowledge and information. The site is driven by the Qi CMS, integrated with Museum + as a collection database.
