Phyllis Hecht is manager and art director for the Web site of the National Gallery of Art, Washington (www.nga.gov) . She was involved in the project from its inception, collaborating in the development of the original Web site plan, determining the underlying architecture and navigation, developing design principles, and evaluating and revising the site for the launch date of February 1997. Previously she was a graphic designer and project manager of print publications at the Gallery. In addition to her work at the National Gallery she has taught graphic design at the University of Virginia's northern Virginia campus and at the Smithsonian Institution's Resident Associate Program.
