The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology has just posted the following opening for a new part-time position. We're looking for someone capable of providing high-quality technical support to the staff of a (mostly) on-campus research museum. The position is nominally a 50-60% position, but may be offered for up to 80% if the incumbent has the relevant skills and experience to also help design and support technology to support the Museum's educational and interpretative efforts.

__Departmental Overview__
The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology is a research unit on the University of California, Berkeley campus that administers public programs, research, and instructional use of a collection of approximately 3.8 million archaeological and ethnographic objects. Also included in the collection is supporting documentation, including an estimated 500,000 photographs, film, and sound recordings accumulated through systematic research and donations since the Museum's founding in 1902. The Museum, accredited by the American Association of Museums, engages in external loans for research and exhibition; development of exhibitions and public programs in the Museum's gallery; conservation research and treatment; and care and maintenance of its vast collections.

__Responsibilities__
Under supervision of the Head of Research & Information Systems, this position provides technical support for all activities related to desktop (and laptop) computer systems, networks, and related peripherals requiring a professional, theoretical knowledge of network infrastructure, internal desktop systems, applications software, and hardware. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and upgrades a mixed environment of computer hardware, software, networks, and peripheral equipment; prepares documentation, and provides user assistance to Museum staff. Communicates highly technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel. Recommends hardware and software solutions, including new acquisitions and upgrades. Participates in development of information technology and infrastructure projects. Conducts training programs designed to educate the Museum's computer users about basic and specialized applications. Diagnoses internal inquiries as they relate to maintenance of computers, application systems, and related technology. Performs related work as required.

__Required Qualifications__
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience and training.
- Interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels of the organization, a demonstratively high level of independence in work performance, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of desktop and business/technical support systems, as well as other areas of IT.
- Knowledge of campus enterprise system dependencies, and campus computer system requirements, recommendations and policies, including security standards.
- Experience with Windows server, Active Directory, Filemaker Server, Filemaker Pro, in addition to extensive experience installing, supporting, and troubleshooting local and network peripherals.
- Must possess the mobility necessary to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions, the strength to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds; the ability to read printed materials and a computer screen; and the ability to communicate in person and over the telephone.

$4,250 - $5,833.33 / Monthly
$51,000 - $70,000 / Annually

Key Responsibilities:

• Provides technical advice and support for research, administrative and instructional computing. Supports, troubleshoots and maintains desktop and server hardware, operating systems, networking, peripherals and software applications used by departmental staff and research laboratories.

• Provides advice on new computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment and other related purchases.

• Performs departmental administration for CalAgenda campus calendaring service.

• Analyzes, installs, modifies and supports operating systems and application, database and utility software. Analyzes business problems to be solved with automated systems.

• Administers departmental Active Directory infrastructure as well as centralized patching and virus protection services.

• Administers departmental file, database, and print servers.

• Performs departmental administration for campus backup service. Assists staff and research labs with local and network backup systems.

• Analyzes and implements LAN and/or WAN system projects. Main contact for network installation requests.

• Maintains security configurations. Responsible for developing and maintaining secure configurations for departmental computers and network devices. Serves as primary contact for campus Systems and Network Security (SNS)

• Administers departmental file and database servers.

• Designs and develops databases for a variety of administrative and research support uses, including scripts to automate operations and provide a simplified user interface.

• Develops electronic and hardcopy documentation for standard operating procedures for computing support staff.

• Develops electronic and hardcopy training materials for departmental staff.

• Maintains and expands technical skills and knowledge by reading professional journals and trade publications, researching technical and vendor web sites, attending professional meetings, and formal and informal hardware and software training. May train users in conversion and implementation of system.

• Provides backup support to other computing support staff.

• Participates in short- and long-term planning with other computing support staff and managers to define unit’s scope of responsibilities, develop policies, standard operating procedures, work standards, and identify necessary resources. Implements related business processes.

• Manages projects, may function as a lead within the department.
