Why:
Indicommons was founded by a collective of Flickr enthusiasts to champion and sustain The Commons. The
Group opened on 24 December and the Indicommons website launched on 7 January.
Indicommons activities include:
- Hosting a public Flickr Commons group to bring together Flickr staff, participating Commons institutions
and members of the public in a space to celebrate, play with, and carry forward The Commons - Communicating updates to The Commons – both on the blog, and through outreach, such as this BBC
Interview with founder Anna Graf - ‘Sub-curation’ of Commons content, connecting photographs across institutions and in time (‘then
and now’) - Organising tagging campaigns
- Developing Commons-specific tools, e.g. power feeds, the “Flickr Stay in Commons” Greasemonkey script, and a batch date changer
- Seeking out and sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of participating organisations, e.g. Stephanie Fysh’s
interview with Helena Zinkham of the Library of Congress - Organising on-site meetups, such as an upcoming event at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich on 11 February
- Sharing more philosophical musings on the meaning and practice of The Commons, such as
striatic’s Rough Around the Edges and zyrcster’s On the notion of the Commons
They do all of this on a completely voluntary basis, in an entirely self-organising way, for the love of the Commons. There’s no better community service than that.
