Your Photo Here: An Online Contest Solution
Abstract
For several years, the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) has experimented with using contests to interact with visitors, encourage creativity, and expand awareness about special exhibitions and collections. These contests were typically done with private judging because there were not any easy, inexpensive means of launching online contests with public voting.
Recognizing the potential for reaching even larger audiences through contests with public voting, MOPA joined with the Balboa Park Online Collaborative (BPOC) to develop an open source online contest solution with funding from the IMLS Sparks! competition. Developed as a Drupal module and as a packaged product for non-Drupal sites, the software enables user submission of photos, videos, and/or narratives; procedures for approving and publishing content; and voting restriction tools.
During the demonstration session, BPOC staff will review the technical aspects of setting up and managing an online contest using the new software. MOPA staff will discuss ways the museum has incorporated online contests into broader education and marketing initiatives to increase visitors (both online and at the museum), integrate non-expert viewpoints into exhibitions, and improve its understanding of visitor interests.
