Dr. Manfred A. Bogen received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Nottingham University (UK) in the field of quality of service evaluation in distributed environments. He received his Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Bonn.

Since 1983, Manfred Bogen is working at the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (former GMD - German National Research Center for Information Technology) as scientist in the area of computer networks and computer-supported cooperative work. In 1994 he became Manager and Head of the Competence Center 'Value-added Solutions' responsible for national and international media and Internet projects.

Under his leadership, the German Research Association (DFN) extended its value-added services to include email, file transfer and directory in a networked multi-protocol environment. He was also responsible for developing a secure Internet and WWW infrastructure for the German government and media outlets such as Deutsche Welle, Hessischer Rundfund, and Süddeutsche Zeitung. He was founder and convenor of the international working group "Quality Management for Networking" at TERENA (Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association).

Between 2001 and 2004 Manfred Bogen acted as Vice President Computer Services for L-Soft international Inc. in Washington D.C., USA. Since 2002 he is Managing Directory of L-Soft Germany GmbH.

Starting in August 2004, Manfred Bogen now is the Manager and Head of the Department 'Virtual Environments (VE)' at the Fraunhofer Institute Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS. Under his leadership, the VE group participated in the EU-funded DHX (Digital Ecological and Artistic Heritage Exchange), INT-MANUS, ARGUNAUT, and ARiSE projects. On the national level, Manfred Bogen was responsible for the "Bernini Digital" project (Digital Ecological and Artistic Heritage Exchange) and the "Digital Beethoven House" project, a cooperation with the Beethoven Museum in Bonn, Germany.
