GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the leadership of the Director of Information and Interpretive Technology and in collaboration with management across the Museum, the Associate Director for Interactive Technology creates and manages interactive strategies to broaden access to the permanent collection and special exhibitions.  These strategies will enhance the Museum’s ability to engage existing audiences more effectively, develop new audiences, build greater awareness of the Museum in the community as a cultural and educational resource, and strengthen its brand both nationally and internationally.

The Associate Director for Interactive Technology is responsible for planning and implementing a broad range of projects, working closely with the Division of Marketing and Communications, curatorial departments, and the Division of Education as the primary resources for content and information about visitors and their learning preferences.  Among these projects are the ongoing development and enhancement of the Museum’s website, the creation of new mobile applications, and the design of interpretive tools to facilitate broader access to and greater understanding of the collection and special exhibitions. The Associate Director for Interactive Technology should be experienced in the development and implementation of digital strategies in cultural and educational institutions and have an extensive background in online engagement, interactive design, and digital communications.

Managing a team of creative professionals, this role is also responsible for staffing, project management, and budgeting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Deliver creative and effective leadership to the staff of the department.
  • Develop and manage institutional plans for the utilization of interactive technology.
  • Champion the creative and effective use of interactive technologies across the Museum.
  • Identify appropriate interactive and communications tools that support the Museum’s strategic goals.
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and ongoing development of the Museum’s website to maximize engagement, ensure updated and dynamic content, increase visitor engagement, and build community.
  • Orchestrate the development—both by Museum staff and external contractors—of interactive tools for the interpretation of the collection and special exhibitions online and in the galleries.
  • Establish the metrics to determine effectiveness of programs and projects.

Maintain active participation in field to stay current on the latest developments in interactive technology and digital communications and for their evaluation in terms of current and future needs.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, training, and experience)

 BA/BS in related field or equivalent experience (advance degree preferred).

  • Five years experience leading an interactive technology or new media team.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Experience in non-profit or museum sector strongly desired.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Ability to develop and align departmental goals effectively with organizational strategy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments and with cross-departmental teams.
  • Ability to multi-task and work efficiently under pressure with careful attention to detail.
  • Well-developed understanding of quantitative analysis and measurement best practices as they relate to interactive technology and audience engagement.
