Content Producer, Mobile Interpretive Media

Under the direction of the Head of Interpretive Media, the Content Producer, Mobile Interpretive Media is responsible for developing a range of mobile interpretive resources around the museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection for both in-house and off-site visitors, with the aim of making works of modern and contemporary art more meaningful to a broad and diverse public. This position guides the mobile content development process, addressing museum visitor needs including accessibility concerns. The position also serves as the primary liaison with other departments to plan and implement publishing, deployment, and promotion of mobile resources.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as managing editor and lead content developer for interpretive audio, video, and text featured in the SFMOMA App, an experience designed primarily for in-gallery use, with duties including:
    • in collaboration with the Head of Web and Digital Platforms and Senior Content Strategist, contribute to strategic planning around content and UX of the SFMOMA App
    • in collaboration with Curatorial and Editorial teams, specify mobile tour stop lists for special exhibitions and permanent collection installations and rotations; ensure that these lists are implemented correctly during gallery installation
    • identify interviews to conduct, video and audio clips to produce, and text and images required for screen layouts; secure permissions for use where required
    • record curator, artist, and visitor commentaries for use in SFMOMA’s mobile materials
    • allocate content development duties to writers and script developers, contracting with outside vendors on content development and production as needed
    • shepherd mobile content scripts through internal and external review and approval processes as required
    • develop and implement plans for publishing mobile stop information in-gallery, working with colleagues in Curatorial, Design, and Web and Digital Platforms
    • ensure universal accessibility by managing initiatives to translate mobile content into multiple languages and to create affordances for visually and hearing impaired visitors
    • create and maintain production calendars and budgets; track project expenses
    • coordinate outside vendors and in-house team members to ensure publication deadlines are met
    • In collaboration with the Senior Content Strategist, plan and supervise evaluations of SFMOMA’s mobile interpretive resources and their impact on visitor experience. Revise content and strategies in response to findings.
    • Work with colleagues in Operations; Visitor Services; Web and Digital Platforms; and Marketing and Communications to ensure that mobile interpretation resources and strategies are incorporated effectively into the museum’s physical infrastructure, visitor experience, and promotional strategies.
    • Work with colleagues in other areas to broadcast and syndicate interpretive content, publishing to web-based platforms, channels and feeds outside the SFMOMA App.
    • Assist the Head of Interpretive Media in the development and commissioning of experimental engagement strategies, such as games, interactives, and activities for visitors of all ages. Oversee their implementation and, where it is deemed appropriate, integration into the App.
    • Maintain professional contacts with staff of other museums, and attend conferences and professional meetings to keep informed about new practices in museum interpretation.
    • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: Possession of a B.A., B.F.A., or graduate degree in related field from an accredited college or university, with a strong grounding in twentieth and twenty-first century art and intellectual/cultural history. Masters degree preferred. Strong research, writing, computer and multimedia skills are essential.

Work Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience as a museum educator or digital content producer, including experience as a researcher, writer, and multimedia producer.

Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated proficiency in creating innovative and effective interpretive content, preferably in the mobile space. Excellent organizational and project management skills. Ability to work independently and take initiative as required. Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external contractors across several different areas of specialization. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a record of publishing writing and/or multimedia about art for a broad and diverse audience.

I work in Interpretive Media at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art where I co-produce multimedia such as audio tours, artist video interviews, podcasts, other digital storytelling tools, and onsite educational spaces. I also commission and curate games in a museum context through events and exhibitions such as ArtGameLab and Ahhhcade. My professional research interests include crowd-sourced and assignment-based artwork, alternate reality games, institutional critique, and avant-garde culture as an engine of broader social and political change.
