Technical Web Manager

Department - New Media, Location - IWM London

With over 600 staff, two million visitors a year and major tourist attractions at five sites (Imperial War Museum London, Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms and HMS Belfast in London; IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire; and IWM North in Manchester) the Imperial War Museum prides itself on its reputation as a forward-thinking museum.

As Technical Web Manager, you will join a newly created department that is about to embark on an exciting and extensive programme of work that will include delivery of: a new IWM website; gallery-based multimedia and; co-ordinated and strategic e-marketing, eCommerce and social media activity.

Working with a small technical team, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining functionality within the Museum web and intranet sites and web-based gallery systems, taking a technical lead on the following:

  • Delivery and implementation of a comprehensive technical web strategy
  • Establishing and maintaining technical standards, processes and procedures
  • Specification, procurement, implementation of the CMS for a new website
  • Future integration of both web and multimedia development, including mobile applications
  • Implementation of an integrated e-commerce platform
  • All future web development

As an experienced technical manager and web developer you will need:

  • Proven track record of developing and managing large-scale websites
  • The relevant programming accreditation and qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge of web technologies, including CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Microsoft .NET, ASP.Net, HTML, XML, Apache, IIS etc.
  • Experience of database and search engine development: Solr, Microsoft SQL and MySQL
  • Knowledge of W3C Compliance standards and experience of Web 2.0 functionality, development and integration
  • Proven experience of search engine optimisation and web analytics

Your skills:

As Technical Web Manager your skills should include:

  • Effective management of people, systems and resources and the ability to work to project deadlines and budgets
  • The ability to develop and implement a technical web strategy for the Museum
  • The ability to think laterally and creatively in order to overcome obstacles and find alternative ways forward
